Description: Located in the heart of Cambridge, opposite Kings College Chapel, The Cambridge Chop House is a traditional British bar and restaurant that has been popular with locals and visitors from further afield since it opened in 2007. Split over two levels, the ground floor boasts views of Kings College Chapel while the basement is an intimate, atmospheric cellar split into four rooms. The menu offers British classics made from locally sourced ingredients and the two course set lunch and pre-theatre menu is excellent value for money. Popular dishes include Mutton Barnsley chops; whole sea bass with wholegrain mustard sauce; and daily changing sausages made on site. The hearty portions are best served with local ales straight from the cask or wine from an extensive list.

“Children? Sorry, we are full this evening.”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Our concierge tried to book us a table, the time slot was agreed, the number of diners was confirmed as four, but on hearing that two were young children the table was suddenly unavailable. Thumbs down for this restaurant. We won't be trying again.

Dear Sir/Madam, Obviously this comment troubles me greatly as we are a very child friendly restaurant. I have spoken to the management and they cannot recall any conversation like this taking place. I would appreciate it if the complainant could contact me so I can find out which hotel concierge made the booking, so I can contact him and find out exactly what occurred.
I can assure you we never refuse a booking based on children being in the party.
Regards.

“Such great food!”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

My husband, father-in-law and I visited the Cambridge Chop House this past Saturday evening and it was fantastic!! Between the three of us we had the sirloin steak, the old spot pork t-bone chop, and the lemon and thyme free range chicken, respectively. Each dish was wonderful and we were quite pleased with our choices. (I wish I could eat that chicken and the accompanying rosemary potatoes every day!) We also enjoyed the chocolate cheesecake, hazelnut crunch & mint ice cream, the blackcurrant ice cream, and the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and ice cream. All three were superb and exactly what each of us was hoping for.

The only downside was that we opted for a table on the ground floor for a more scenic view. While the view was certainly wonderful, it was about 30 degrees (~78 F) outside, so it was quite unpleasant to eat such hot (albeit delicious!) food without any kind of air conditioning. In the future we will definitely take the temperature into account and perhaps opt for a table in the charming basement where it is much cooler.

“We LOVE it here!!”
Reviewed August 16, 2012

....in fact the biggest problem we have is choosing which of their Cambridge restaurants to go to (there is also St John's Chop House, just a 10 min easy stroll). Food is amazing (the pork crackling sticks are inspired and perfect to munch on while you're deciding what to order!), the service is excellent striking the balance between friendly and professional, great value for the quality experience whether you want a romantic table for two or a larger group of friends. We love it!

“Lovely food in an nice atmoshpere”
Reviewed August 16, 2012 via mobile

The food look and tasted fresh.
Proper British food, well cooked which could do with a bit more of local produce. Saying that, the Cornish sardines where rather nice.
It lacks a bit of ambience. And the restaurant is pretty much downstairs. The waiters could do with walking around the tables a bit more often since, due to the walls, you cannot see them.
