“A little gem”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

Went to this pub for the first time last night. Loved the flagstone floor, the beams and the wood furnishings. For starters we ordered the pint of prawns, skate cheek and squid which came with 2 sauces and bread plus the smoked mackerel with horseradish cream and beetroot puree to share between 3 of us, plenty enough and both starters were superb. For main we ordered paella, pan fried chicken breast and crab linguine, the crab dish was one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had, the linguine was buttery, there was just the right amount of chilli to give the dish some heat without overpowering the delicate crab - this dish was an unbelievable £11. For pudding we shared a pannacotta and a chocolate pot which came with a citrus shortbread, both lovely. The prices are very reasonable, starters are around £7, mains from £11-£20, puds around £5.50, wine from £13 upwards. Will definitely be visiting again next time I'm in High Wycombe.

“A very pleasant experience”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

Our first visit here for many years was for lunch earlier today after a visit to a local hospital. It's only 10 minutes from High Wycombe and we picked on the Red Lion after reading the reviews on TA.

Our first impressions were good, it's spotlessly clean, nicely decorated and we were greeted warmly on our arrival.

With some interesting specials on the black board, a comprehensive à la carte menu and a special lunch menu 2 courses for £10, we were spoilt for choice.

We chose from the lunch menu my wife had soup with fish pie to follow and I had duck salad and pressed ham hock with chips with a pint of Rebellion and cider followed with two excellent coffees our bill came to a very reasonable £28. Portions were generous, the service was first class. staff were very efficient and charming.

This is a place you could confidently bring your wife, mother-in-law or boss to without any worries they would be disappointed or you embarrassed.

Overall we though this place was faultless and just wish it was closer to home or our office, we will definitely be returning here for dinner or one of their special themed evenings which look excellent value for money.

“Good food. Friendly service.”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

Chatty landlord/manager, made us feel very welcome. We went for a weekday lunch and the choice was interesting but not expansive and quite pricey (most mains were £13). The fixed price menu for 2 courses is £10 or 3 courses for £13. The portions are large, but we left just enough room to have dessert, which were all home made and delicious, I wasn't keen on the salted chocolate tart, but the eton mess and frangipane pudding were lush. Good choice of wines. A jug of water was offered which I think is a nice touch.
It's a nice, clean, smart looking pub and I would definately go again.

“Great food and location”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

Had a brilliant lunch that was fantastic value. Two courses £10 or three courses £13 we couldn't fault the food or service. Great location for lunch if you are walkers or having a drive around the beautiful countryside in this area.

“Great fish menu and lovely country location”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

Have been here twice and the most recent evening was excellent. The menu is on their web site with some variations when you get to the restaurant for dishes of the day etc. Good selection of fish and of the dishes tried, smoke mackerel starter with orange flavoured sauce was very good. Fish pie creamy and filling and venison (variety of steaks on menu too) tender. Wine by the glass and very friendly service. The clientele looked mainly middle aged so this is a great spot for a quiet evening and quality local food at sensible prices. I suspect many customers go back again and again and are keeping quiet about it. Easy parking. Three miles out of centre of High Wycombe in Great Kingshill on road to Great Missenden.
