My husband and I use the front of Coombe hill in readiness for our mountaineering trips in the Swiss Alps each year, (he does the serious stuff)
A 1000 metres of ascent is equal to 10 walks up to the top touching the monument and back down to the gate.
As there are no mountains in the area this proves to be the next best thing!

Coombe Hill is 5 miles from Aylesbury but if you like the countryside this is a must.
I prefer to park in the public car park by Wendover library and walk up to Coombe Hill. You turn left and walk up past Wendover station and follow the signs for the Ridgeway Walk ,it is the sign of a acorn on the way markers. Its about a mile and a half uphill but the views at the top are stunning. When you get back to Wendover there are cafes and pubs for refreshments.Buy a Ordinance Survey map and explore the area there are some beautiful walks to be found.

With the car park not a long way from the monument it is a very easy walk up a gentle slope but the views are beautiful. During the day, and especially at weekends, the car park is often full so come early or, as I like to do, come late. Going for a walk up Coombe Hill at night, especially in november with the fireworks, is incredibly romantic. So take a torch and someone you love and go enjoy the lights of the vale.

So worth the climb especially from Gerrards Cross makes you appreciate the view even more. Your also not far from the local real ale brewery but thats another review....

Coombe Hill is a great place to walk, but wellies are recommended if it has been raining, as the chalk below the surface doesn't allow for very good drainage. Beautiful views on clear days, but bring a jacket, as it is often windy.
