Description: In 1997, the four brothers opened the Brunel Raj, authentic Indian cuisine. The name of the restaurant compliments its location in Clifton Village. ‘Brunel’ came from the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel who was best known for the creation of the Great Western Railway, the famous SS Great Britain and the world famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. The second name Raj, comes from the Sanskrit work rajan, which means ruler or king. The name ‘Brunel Raj’ thus translates to ‘King Brunel’, paying tribute to Bristol’s most well known merchant, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.Since opening its doors over 10 years ago, Brunel Raj has received great publicity and praise from local press, along with a string of catering awards; including being listed in the Top UK Restaurants by Hardens in 2001 and 2003.The main restaurant seats 48 and is available for small parties subject to booking and availability. We also cater for business and private parties as well as conferences and weddings.

“A typical Indian, but with outstanding food”

Lovely Indian. Youre sat very close together but apart from that its great. Nice food great service can get quite busy so make sure you book. Not the easiest to find unless you know Clifton.

“Evergreen currys”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

As a member of a curry club that has eaten in every curry house in Bristol over the past 10 years, I can safely say the Brunel Raj is right up there. Always reliable.

“Awesome food, slightly scary service in a group”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

The restaurant was brilliant, the food was fab and the service good. We were in a big group and the orders were perfect, but the delivery of the food was stressful and the waiter shouted at us quite a lot. That aside i thoroughly recommend the restaurant as we found it quite amusing and will definitely go back soon!

“Comfortable, good staff and reliable food”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

Some of the reviews below are just out of order. i have been going to the Brunel Raj for years, and, whilst it doesn't pretend to push back the boundaries of sub-continental cuisine, it is a safe reliable and professional restaurant.

The staff have always been unfailingly polite, professional and efficient, even when we have witnessed some dreadful behaviour by beered-up yobs, fortunately a rare experience in this part of Clifton. The food is reliable and well-executed, the portions decent, and the spicing sensible, but not bland.

The fact that reservations are pretty much essential is testament to their enduring quality.

“Very nice restaurant”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

Found this on a stroll from the Avon Gorge Hotel. We went in because it was busy on a Monday night! First class firendly service and good food to go with it. Reasonable prices, £59 for three starters, mains and drinks. Highly recommended.
