“Fantastic authentic Chinese food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

This restaurant is a real deal in terms of good authentic Chinese food. The only problem is the lack of menu (apparently they are in the process of translating them) so you really need to know what you want to order. If in doubt helpful staff can recommend dishes for you based on your taste preference.
Overall fantastic food, beautifully cooked. A party of five we had Chinese steamed buns, sweet and sour chicken, Sichuan spicy fish, beef chow mein, boiled prawns with sauce, fish fragrant aubergine. Can highly recommend it

“Lovely Staff and Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2012

My flatmates and I live above Wongs and decided to venture down for a meal. Once seated, one of the staff explained to us that they had no english menu but for £18.80 (two courses) or £22.80 (three course) they would make us a selection of dishes. We thought this was a bit pricey but we took the chance.

The food was delicious. To begin with we got massive prawncrackers along with 3 duck pancakes each (spring rolls for my veggie flatmate). The duck itself was decent, no fatty scraps that some places serve. We were then given a steamed dumpling before our main arrived. We received 4 dishes (sea bass, crispy and slow cooked beef and s&s chicken) along with two veggie dishes and were very impressed.

The staff were lovely as well, helping us with our chopsticks and the manger kept coming over to make sure we liked the dishes. The only downside was the price. We will probably visit again once they have an english menu.

“Wongs has changed for the worse”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2012

Having enjoyed meals here twice before, we went with confidence of what to expect. Unfortunately, all has changed. We were told there was no longer an 'English menu' and that they now only sell authentic food. We decided to try their recommended dish (beef) and were dissapointed in its quality. However, it was never clear what we were to be charged and we were shocked to find that a large 'service' charge was aded to an already outragous bill.

“Authentic Chinese Food & Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

If you go here,DONT bother to ask for a menu (its in Chinese) and don't expect standard
"British Chinese"' - if you want that, go to your local takeaway. Food here is cooked in a true Chinese way- whatever can be purchased fresh is what's available! It was full of Chinese people so clearly that is a recommendation in itself. I think the basic price is just over £20pp for more than enough - simply tell them of the sort of things you might like- fish, soup, duck, squid, vegetables - whatever - and let them bring you the delights. The waitresses will give you advice to modify your combinations if they don't match. This is real food with fresh ingredients, served in a wonderfully decorated environment .Apparently the first owner spent a small fortune on the interior and it really is special . Some may find it a bit noisy but its just authentic- its like being in Hong Kong .
I went with 3 friends and we all agreed it was superb . Apparently this is new ownership so earlier reviews are irrelevant. It's what's there NOW that counts and its VERY good. We will be back.

“Wrong wrong wrong”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

Led to our table miles away from the other diners, told this is the only menu that we all had to share... The restaurant can seat over 150 people yet they can't give us a menu each! They need to order another 50 menus. Costs a fortune informed that what is on the only menu to be shared by all 100 diners is not accurate some dishes are not available, weirder and weirder I thought. Ordered the set menu when hors d arrived only 3 out of 5 arrived, we asked for the menu back and yes two dishes were missing we queried this and were told the menu was wrong!!! Asked for bill and left. Now for those who had the szhechuan not Cantonese you probs arrived without children calmly soaked up the vibe concluded the restaurant specialises in Szechuan cuisine enquirer as to recommendations and had a nice time but for myself the biggest disaster ever, beyond awful
