Description: The Royal Oak, situated on Gloucester Road in North Bristol, reopened in July 2009 after an extensive refurbishment by owners Neil and Olivia Greenwood. The pub offers a relaxing environment to enjoy a range of quality drinks and fresh, seasonal food. We are very proud to have won Pub of the Year in our first of year of opening as voted for by Evening Post readers. We are very welcoming of children and have a large family friendly garden to be enjoyed throughout the year. A new addition to the garden for 2012 is our outdoor kitchen and wood fired pizza oven - check our What's on page for information on opening hours.

“Relaxing...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 20, 2013

This place has recently been refurbished. It has a nice relaxed kind of bistro feel about it. The food is very good but the menu is a bit sparse. I have been here a few times lately and there doesn't seem to be as many children wandering about as there used to be. This is very refreshing. It makes your experience as an adult much more relaxing.

“Sunday Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

We went in a group of 8 for Sunday lunch. Service was excellent- 2 lovely waitresses, who kept us well supplied with everything and were charming. Roast pork belly was absolutely brill- I don't usually go for crackling, but this was something else..... Cauliflower cheese delicious. Veg OK, apart from disappointing roast spuds. This place has atmosphere and the staff are lovely.

“The food was stunning”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

Excellent meal, but having rang in the morning and being told we'd have to wait until 2-30 for a table, we got to the pub at the allotted time, found our table, and tried to get served. It took almost ten minutes of waiting, the beer was worth waiting for, but IMO very expensive. We were then informed that they were not taking any orders for food for fifteen minutes, we decided to e patient and wait. We were then told that there was no lamb dishes left only beef and pork, by the time I got served again the choice had diminished to only pork. So we had four porks. I think the problems they suffered from was due to how busy they were, always a good sign, but not enough staff for the work required. Surely taking as much money as they are they could afford to employ another member of staff, especially on days that the nearby Bristol Rugby are playing at home. Don't be put off by my (sort of) negative comments, the food and beer was excellent.

“Quality food on The Gloucester Road”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

Took the wife for our anniversary as the food is always good. We arrived before seven so took advantage of "express menu". We had a main course ..a beautifully cooked home made pie really tasty and a desert..Panacotta with seared apricots...lovely. All this for less than a tenner!! I dont think ive eaten so cheaply at such a high standard. The staff are always polite and attentive and bonus they have a great Bourbon selection. One of Gloucester Roads/Bristol top pubs

“A real pleasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

We went there for a meal on our anniversary, our river trip having been called off due to the weather. I managed get a burger without it being smeared with dollop, which is more difficult than it sounds! It was delicious, possibly the beat on the Gloucester Road, and so were the triple cooked chips.

My wife had the fish cakes, which she enthused over. We shared a cheese board to finish. Lovely cheese, but we could have done with a few more biscuits.

Proper coffee finished off an excellent meal. This pub used to be a tip when it was the John Cabot - it's a delight to visit now.

A very nice touch was that we were wished Happy Anniversary as we left. We will return.
