Owner description: Discover what a Bristol sugar plantation and slave owner's home might have looked like around 1790. Eleven rooms spread over four floors reveal what life was like above and below stairs, from the kitchen in the basement where servants prepared meals to the elegant formal rooms above.

“The Georgian Hose, Bristol.”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

This is a place which is tailor-made for history buffs. The house is laid out to show what life was like in Georgian times. You can imagine the well-to do living here and below stairs you egt the feel of what life was like for the servants. A good hour getting the feel of what it was like to live in a house like this centuries ago.

“Interresting and informative”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Interresting and informative - provides an insight into the everyday life of the people who lived in Bristol in the era. However it's difficult to find - this place deffinetly needs to be signposted better - I found it totally by accident, when taking a walk just 3 hours before I was leaving the city.

“Do not miss”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

I only came upon this gem by accident whilst being shown something else nearby and on entering I felt as if I had been transported back to the fabulous Sudley House in Liverpool. The owners of the house had made their money from slavery just like the Tarleton family who originally built Sudley. There are so many parallels between the two cities although Bristol has a slightly more "commerce" feel to me whilst Liverpool is a little more "shipping".Anyway the house is well worth an hour of anybodys time with all the rooms containing something worth seeing.Particularly striking is the beautiful double writing desk (not sure what its proper title is) and the amazing sunken bath where the owner used to take a cold dip every morning- brave kind of guy. Some good paintings and informative section about slavery as well as well recreated downstairs kitchen and laundry make this a great place to visit if you have any interest in history.

“Excellent free museum”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

I have been here several times and think it is a great house to visit. I especially like the kitchens and the plunge pool in the basement. The exhibition regarding the slave trade is interesting.
