Really enjoyed our latest trip to the museum. Took grandchildren aged 6 and 4. They especially liked the stuffed animals. Because it's free you can visit often, you do not feel you have wasted money by not spending hours pouring over exhibits. Cafe is OK but better to zip up the road to Browns.

“The jewel in the crown”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

I have a longstanding affection for Bristol City Museum. The building itself oozes history and character. The walk from the foyer to the main hall fills one with awe about the importance of this landmark Bristol building.

I could probably go on for too long about this cherished museum, but instead will give you some highlights:

The Egyptology section is excellent: really informative and engaging. There are some excellent artefacts there but, importantly, the access to these is brilliant. There is lots of information to be read but this is subtle: you are not simply bombarded with information.

The exotic animals section remains superb and a real testament to the museum's history. This section was full of excited children when my wife and I visited, but also engaged and interested adults.

There are some excellent pieces of artwork and the newly-refurbished blue gallery is superb. There is also an excellent painting of Noah's Ark, which is an absolute must, and a wonderful painting of Ram Mohan Roy, the Hindu reformer.

Overall this museum has something for everyone. For the adults it is informative and interesting, for the children engaging and exciting. This is surely Bristol's premier museum?

“Perennial City Museum”

Long established city museum with small shop and café but a good range of permanent exhibits and regular exhibitions. The Banksy takeover was fantastic. Always popular with school trips but great to just pop in and see a few exhibits.

“Great allround museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

This museum has everything. Set in a great building this museum has dinosaurs and Egyptian mummies for the younger audience. It has a great art collection including medieval masterpieces to modern classics. Also has geology, taxonomy, siver and ceramics.
