“Great place with a fun chapel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2012

Bristol Cathedral is on college Green opposite a 50's embracing monster of a Town Hall which is surmounted but a couple of ace gilded unicorns which the architect apparently ordered without anyone knowing and arrived as a bit of a surprise. What would the press make of that today.

However, I digress. According to Timpson's book "England's 100 best churches" St Mary Redcliffe is [Bristol's] best church after the Cathedral" and St Mary's gets 5/5*, so it must be good and it is.

The site is reckoned to have had a church for over 1000 years. There are a Chapter House and other remains. "The Nave, Choir & Aisle are all the same height making .... Bristol .... the major example of a 'Hall Church' in GB" according to their useful leaflet Sacred Bristol.

The highlight for me is the Lady Chapel, which is used for daily service but it has some really amusing monkey faces as ornaments on the bottom of arches in the side walls; the sculptor had a nice sense of humour. There are several tombs with and without colour/fancy niches and the occasional concert, as well as loads of stuff I've missed. web: www.bristol-cathedral.co.uk will tell all.

Not the most exciting cathedral I have ever seen but still very nice and worth a look round for an hour if in the area.
