Reception looked ok but the rest of the hotel was dreadful: run-down, cracks everywhere.could do with a complete make-over. The room cost £36 and there was another £6 to pay for hotel parking! The single room was small and grotty. I could not even sit up in bed as there was a shelf thoughtfully placed just where my head should be. The sink in the room didn't drain properly. The bedding was thin, old and tatty. The separate bathroom was freezing cold and there was no shower. The window was permanently open. I couldn't wait to leave and in fact decided to leave without breakfast. The address is Clifton, which gives a good impression , but it is not Clifton Village. You would have to be desperate to stay here.

I spend several weeks a year in Bristol. For the last five-six years, I have stayed regularly at the Washington. It is clean (but the carpets are tired) and quiet (if you get a room at the back). The staff are very friendly (lots of Poles) and the breakfast is excellent. A single at GBP 52 is very good value. About 15 minutes on foot from the city centre. Rooms are well equipped for the price range - but the toiletries are not free for the last year or so. As everywhere in the UK, the hot water is difficult to get right (goes from tepid to scalding very rapidly). I will continue to use the hotel. Very good value for money.

I thought this hotel gave great value as a budget hotel in an attractive part of the city. The staff were very polite and helpful and the room was clean and tidy and had everything I needed. The fresh fruit and choice of reasonable coffee were particularly welcome!
I had a good meal in the restaurant 'Racks', in the sister hotel nearby and breakfast at the Washington was plentiful and good quality.

Stayed in the Washington Hotel, Clifton for three nights to visit University of Bristol. Very good deal available (through Expedia), including cooked breakfast. The room was small and in the basement, so was a bit cold, and the decor was tired; but this was made up for by the very helpful and friendly staff, added extras like fresh fruit in the room and good breakfast service. I can imagine at busier times, the breakfast room is too small, so as the hotel advises, you would need to go early. Overall, very good experience for the price and I will return.

I stayed there on a trip with my dad this summer. We stayed in I think, room 3 (in the basement) We had large luggage and we had to drag them down two sets of stairs. We got in the room to find that almost everything was painted white and it had a very basement-like feel. There was a window, and it's bottom was level with the ground (it was partially underground) The room was very dark. The bathroom was a bit small but fine otherwise. Breakfast was terrible, the only things that they had were unflavored yogurt bananas and a few types of cereal. It wasn't in a great location and I wouldn't stay there again.

This is a small budget hotel. I found it very fairly priced and got excellent value for relatively little money.

At £56 a night in a good location, I was not entirely surprised to find that the building had some issues. It's not purpose built and has narrow staircases, and limited sound proofing might be troublesome if you get people next door returning late. I stayed in a lower ground floor room, where the carpets showed some sign of wear and there was a slight window draught, but - and this is the important bit - it was spotlessly clean and had a very nice new bathroom. There was a very good tea/coffee tray in the room, and fruit, and a nice colour scheme that made the room look a lot more expensively decorated than it probably was. I missed a proper desk space, but otherwise, for a single room, it was fairly spacious and well planned. I'd say the staff make this place - they were cheerful, helpful and friendly (very prompt service at breakfast and the offer of an umbrella to take out on a nasty night!) and unusually for this price bracket of hotels, some thought had clearly gone into providing nice touches.

It is extremely handy for the university, and close to Clifton village. There are two bus stops close by, with frequent service to Temple Meads (although the 9 bus does take a detour!). Taxi from Temple Meads was £7.50.

All in all, if you're on a budget, this is a find!! I'll certainly stay again.

I stayed four nights in a compact, but reasonably comfortable single room on the first floor. Bathroom was a good size, with tub/shower. Room faced the back and was quiet. Friendly and helpful front desk. Cooked breakfasts were quite good. Location in Clifton is a fair hike to the city centre. I used the train to Clifton Down from Temple Meads on arrival and the bus from a 100 metres or so up the street back to Temple Meads on departure.

Plenty of dining options a few minutes north on Whiteladies Road and south on Queen's Road.

A couple of oddities. Soap was provided in the bathroom, but they wanted to charge £1 for shampoo. The coffee/tea tray included herbal teas and a cafetiere with fresh ground coffee. It turned out that I could make better coffee in my room than I could get in the breakfast room.

Good value, and would stay again.
