“Unwarranted worries”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

After booking a weekend at Avon Gorge, the nearest hotel to our son's flat, I was concerned to read some unflattering reviews - the wrong way round, I know! We arrived on Friday afternoon worried about what we had done. Our worries were unwarranted, we did not find a tired hotel with unhelpful staff. The receptionist could not have been more pleasant or helpful. We had one of the Gorge view rooms which has obviously been recently refurbished to a good standard. The large old fashioned tv mentioned in some reviews was not there; instead there was a modern slim tv on the wall of a good sized room. The wifi is free and the broadband is fast. It does annoy me that some hotels still regard wifi as an opportunity to make money out of guests. Car parking is also free, and in Clifton parking is at a premium, so a charge would not be a surprise.
We only had breakfasts in the hotel, where again the staff were very helpful and the food quality was very acceptable - not gourmet, but who wants gourmet for breakfast? There was no fuss made about our son joining us for the meals.
I thought I had left my iPod at the hotel, and the efforts the staff and management went to to try to retrieve it were exemplary.
We would definitely return when we could hopefully enjoy the terrace which has a spectacular view of the Gorge and the Suspension Bridge

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the Gorge

This hotel is wonderfully situated overlooking the gorge, but make sure that you book a room with a view. Rooms at the front of the hotel obviously don't. Parking can be a problem - the hotel only has very limited parking spaces vailable
You wouldn't want to go here for a gastronomic experience, but fortunately there are a good number of restaurants in Clifton village within easy walking distance.
Bristol is a great city with so much to commend it for a short break.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the gorge

Virtually next door to Clifton Bridge, the location would be hard to better. However:
1) Reception staff are stuck behind a screen setback from the reception desk itself; this makes it hard for them to give much of a welcome, and can add to the time it takes to gain their attention.
2) Only one room key was available for our double room - over our 3 night stay we found just how inconvenient that was!
3) We had booked a room with a balcony, a lovely place to have an afternoon drink on arrival; unfortunately, the empty jug and glasses were still on the table on the following morning - and the next two! Perhaps still?
4) We wanted to have a light meal in the adjacent bar, part of the Hotel; sadly, we found nowhere we could sit out of line of sight of big, noisy TV screens, with the sound turned up - though nobody seemed to be watching! We ordered after being told that the meal could be served next door. Eventually it was, but it was so lukewarm that presumably it had hung around for a while because staff had forgotten where it was to have been served - as a result is was scarcely edible.
5) Throughout, communication with staff was hindered by their imperfect grasp of English.

A great pity that a potentially great hotel was so let down by its service.

My partner and I stayed at the Avon Gorge two weeks ago for two nights.

On first arrival, we were really happy with the standard of the hotel and our room (we paid for a premium room on the top floor) - as well as available parking at the rear. Brilliant!

However, what wasn't made clear to us was that the Avon Gorge also host events, so we were subjected to some bass on the first night as there was a wedding reception going on downstairs - but as we were out fairly late I'm not sure what time it went on until.

Breakfast the following morning was very unorganised. Once we were seated, we were offered coffee and toast which didn't arrive, so we had to order a second time and our coffee and toast arrived after our buffet breakfast. A small annoyance I guess, but breakfast on our second morning was just as unorganised and staff were incredibly stressed out.

Our second night at the Avon Gorge was really bad. Our taxi dropped us off at around 10pm at the hotel entrance to loud music and a crowd of 18 year old revelers screaming and banging on passing car windows (yep, true). Even our taxi driver was perturbed as he said 'I think you'll have some noisy neighbours tonight' as we tentatively got out of his car. I was so nervous about passing the (very rowdy) group, we went to seek solace in the very lovely Portculis pub down the road.

On our return it became clear that the Avon Gorge had booked an 18th birthday party. There were drunken people strewn all over reception area - hardly what we expected from what seemed to be a nice hotel at the time of booking. What I found even more disturbing was that there was only one member of staff on the reception desk dealing with the situation. Only one member of staff?!

Managers of Avon Gorge - don't you think your staff deserve more respect than this? Don't you think your customers want to feel safe walking to their rooms?

I'm afraid that we were left completely disappointed by your hotel - and all because of bad decision making. Drunken parties and quiet residential guests don't mix!

Room Tip: Premium rooms are of a great standard.

My family has stayed at this hotel many, many times over the years both pre and post update a few years ago. We love the location and the rooms are traditional and clean. The bathrooms are also a good size. If you get a room with a view over the gorge towards the suspension bridge it's fabulous. In the summer months there is nothing better than to sit on the terrace in the evening marvelling at the wonderful gorge and suspension bridge. We have not had dinner in the hotel over the years as we always tend to eat out but the breakfasts are great and so is the bar. The staff have always been friendly and accommodating.

I booked a family room at the Avon Gorge Hotel specifically for a trip to the Bristol Balloon Fiesta. I called to book the room and did not rely upon their online booking system, as their online booking system indicated they could not accommodate my family. The Avon Gorge Hotel, in fact, could accommodate my family. While overall the stay was good, the experience was hit and miss.

Getting to the hotel and parking is a dreadful experience during the summer when the Balloon Festival is on. The on the hill above the hotel is where many visitors and locals will come to watch balloon launches throughout the event. Dedicated hotel parking is behind the building on a steep, narrow road. None was available for my visit. When asked for parking recommendations, I was told look for parking on the street and good luck. I was fortunate to find legal parking just 50 m up the hill from the hotel, but I wouldn't consider this to be a status quo experience. Just make sure if you're not in hotel parking that you are parked legally (look high and low for signs).

The hotel itself is grand, but a bit dated. The front desk staff I interacted with were courteous and helpful. The dining and room service staff were not rude, but not very accommodating. Depending upon with whom I spoke on any given morning, requests such as poached eggs could or could not be accommodated, nor could specialty coffees like cappuccinos. I really felt like my family was a burden upon the kitchen staff and got in and out as quickly as possible. Room service was fine if you were paying, but a request for ice to the room went unanswered one evening. The next evening I went down to the bar for the ice and was given queer looks at my request. Whatever, just fill the bucket, buddy. Thanks.

Our room and welcome were fantastic. The room was huge! Our family room faced the gorge and had a fantastic view. We were welcomed with a note from the hotel manager, a bottle of wine for mom and dad, and Gromit biscuits for the children. We elected to order room service our first night in and watch the balloon launch from our room over dinner.

If staying at the Avon Gorge for the Balloon Fiesta, you have but only a 20 minute walk across the bridge and into the estate where the event is held. Just be warned that some evenings, the bridge is closed and you may have to take a grueling, more treacherous path back to the hotel if walking. Finding a cab probably would have been a better idea. Otherwise, the area around the hotel is great. Plenty of eating options that are child friendly. You can catch a bus into town just give minutes away.

So, overall, our stay at Avon Gorge was great, but it was marred by what seem like amateur mistakes by such a "prestigious" hotel. Their breakfast service could certainly use some improvement. Otherwise, it was a good hotel for the Balloon Fiesta and helped make a great summer memory for us and our children.

Room Tip: No AC, but room came with a fan that circulated air very well, keeping room cool in August.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel on Thursday the 3rd October for one night, we booked a suite room, on arrival the staff were efficient and gave us the key to a room called the kings room we had to go back out of the hotel about 30yds down the street down a few steps to find the room when we went in the room had a very strong smell of damp and fusty carpets it was a superb apartment but indeed of a makeover we went back yo reception and said thanks but no thanks because of the smell we couldn't stay in that room, it was not an issue they changed our room to the princess suite in the hotel and this was one of the upgraded rooms and was fantastic king size bed, 32 " tv separate sitting area large oval bath two showers and his and her sinks at £119 for b&b was fantastic value, we had a wonderful breakfast with very good service overhaul a lovely hotel staff were efficient and they seem to be trying to upgrade the hotel, you call it as you find it and we found it very nice and excellent value for money in a lovely position, if you don't like high street shops and are looking for something different shop in the area of the hotel in Clifton it is lovely village with a wealth of boutique style shops lovely cafés an pubs that seem to be in abundance.
