“Beautiful hotel, great location”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Lovely hotel, very elegant inside and out, superb location for walking the waterfront, very close to the cathedral, the ferries and the old town. Parking 12.50 a day, but worth it for the amazing location. Visiting the SS Great Britain is a nice waterside walk or a ferry ride from just across the street. Friendly courteous hotel staff - providing excellent poached eggs at breakfast! Very elegant public rooms - spectacular ballroom, lovely drawing rooms and the bar opening onto large courtyard with palms. The bar and ballroom had private events on friday and sat when I was there, but you walk between them to reach the lifts, which was amusing, and there was always somewhere else to sit in the drawing rooms. Very well thought out comfortable room, free wifi, and express checkout very convenient. Thanks to other reviewers for recommending an upper floor! Good tip - the hotel is so close to harbourside, that side of the street is very busy and noisy *all* night, and the hotel also had a loud prom and wedding band in the ballroom until midnight. We still had a peaceful stay - our room on the 4th floor facing into the courtyard was lovely and quiet, and you can turn off the aircon. Anyway my parents reported they also slept well despite being on the first floor facing all the bars on the waterside, so the double glazing must be pretty good! They reported when they looked out the street was busy til 6am and beyond, but it did not disturb their rest at all. Did not try any dining apart from breakfast, which was excellent.

Room Tip: Upper floor facing into the courtyard is nice and quiet, but don't worry too much, I was told th...

Nice to return here after some years, I was here many years ago after a refurbishment.

Service is great as is the food in quality and selection, I like a hotel buffet breakfast very much.

Location is great for Park Street and the docks, main shopping area a short walk away.

Parking is a bit steep at £12.50/day - wireless network is OK with some blocking enforced.

Room Tip: Personally for the weekend to avoid traffic an inner room is a good choice.

Beautiful hotel in Bristol. Has a cobblestone circle out front and a gorgeous statue of Queen Elizabeth in the center of it. We ordered room service one night an they completed the order as requested and it was good too. The people have been friendly that work here. Note if you stay here you should take the train to Bath & from there do the one hour trip to Stonehenge - we did!
There is a nice gym and indoor pool also. Gorgeous dining room. This is like a new hotel in an old historic building. The building is beautiful. The room was nice and the bathroom was large with marble vanity & tub/shower combo. Enjoyed are stay very much!

I was a speaker at a conference being held at the Hotel. Because of this the hotel was full. Thus at the Hotel's convenience ie not mine I was put in one of the 3 smoking rooms. I was not asked or informed. Prior to this I had assumed all rooms were non-smoking.

The windows were locked shut. I could not sleep in the room because of the overpowering smell of smoke. All they could offer me was someone to unlock the window. The evening receptionist on entering the room said he could not sleep there, and asked if I wanted a special room clean. As it was now midnight I said no.

I have written to them since I got home and have had no reply. Can all of this really be a 4 star experience?

Room Tip: make sure they do not put you in a smoking room

my husband surprised me for our wedding anniversary with a night here. It was very pleasant but a tad expensive we thought. We asked for a room on a higher floor which was fine except for the very noisy seagulls outside the window and on the roof! One of the lamps on the desk was not working and there was only a lamp on 1 bedside table which seemed a bit odd, surely there should be 2, 1 each.
Breakfast was lovely and unrushed - not leaving the restaurant until 11.30 am!
Car park free for residents - even better.

Great hotel, right next to the harbour and theatre. Our room was comfortable and clean. Staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent and lovely dinning area. Will definitely stay again as it's central to sight seeing and shopping.

I stayed here over a weekend while on a two week business trip. I was looking for a good central location, a great bed, good linens, service and good food ....here's what I got:

Location - very central and good for sightseeing - at first I found the area just a bit frayed around the edges (boarded up shop fronts across the street, fast food chains around the corner, etc) but you soon realize that on the other side of the park is the old town, and to the right when you exit the hotel is the quay with a great choice of pubs, and to the left is the cathedral and a lovely shopping street (not high end, but some good independent shops) ...and coffee houses all around in every direction. The neighbourhood quickly grows on you and so yes, check mark on good central location.

Room: I ended up staying in two suites - paid extra but space was well worth it. Suite #1 - 821 - is very large and great if you are two. There is an actual separate sitting room, dressing/desk room, very large bathroom with great big tub and separate shower ... and two sinks. The bed is a king and yes, comfortable with good linens. Suite #2 - 1121 - is slightly smaller all around but cozier. I changed floors to get away from some of the street noise that comes from being close to pubs. It helped - noise was still there but a bit more muffled. The overall condition of the rooms is best described as tired - there are stains on the carpet, furniture, sink areas, toilet bowls, etc., not disgusting but not four star quality.

Service: Now this is where they definitely lose their fourth star for me, because it is truly hit and miss. The positive is that their reception staff is terrific - very friendly and willing to help. Their room service staff is also very nice. However their kitchen can't seem to get the simplest of orders right - I ordered food twice and both times it was delivered opposite of what I asked for. Wait staff ...just okay, I had four different people serve me in the matter of 45 mins and none seemed overly concerned or friendly.

So overall it wasn't horrible and I more or less got what I hoped for ....it just really isn't a four star.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher level floor.
