Malago Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #9 of 53 Bristol B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

For an overnight stay we thought the Malago suited our needs. A clean and tidy room with a decent bed. Only downsides, we felt, were the fire doors being kept open at all times and the very tight parking at the rear. Get there early and park in front of the big steel gates. Overall quite pleasant and surprisingly quiet.

When my sister and I were driving up to the Malago we were a bit skeptical. The area is "old" but the more you look it is not that bad. There are a lot of college age people around and you can tell this part of town is just a little bit inexpensive.

After being greeted at the door by the hostess, super sweet by the way, we made our way to our room. There is no lift but it's fine. The room was perfect for just the two of us and very nicely decorated. The bathroom was quite large with a shower and for you other ladies with long hair, great water pressure!

There is a mini supermarket and some pubs within walking distance.

The wifi was a bit weak in some parts of the room but as long as you weren't sitting in the corner it worked.

Breakfast was a nice CONTINENTAL one. The fruit was fresh, the tea was good. Plus there were pastries, toast, cereal and yogurt.

All in all I think this was a great little hotel. If you are driving be sure to get there early because the parking lot is tiny. But the staff is very nice and we slept well! Enjoy!

OMG this place is dirty, noisy in a rough area, parking is impossible and because of its main road situation sleeping is also impossible, we spent 1 night there, couldn't wait to leave the following morning, it should be condemned its sheer hell an awful place. Would definitely NOT stay there again. C Smith

This is not the prettiest of hotels - it's an ugly, modern building on a busy, unattractive street. However, it's great value for money, clean and unpretentious. We had room 16, on the third floor, and while the view was very urban (a rusting iron framework, backs of houses and the car park) the room itself was clean and surprisingly well equipped. Good tv with Sky News, spotless bedlinen and a hot drinks tray. The shower room was functional though dark - it has no window- but the shower was good and the towels are clean and a decent size. There's no soap, just a bottle of liquid soap on the basin, but that's easily remedied. The breakfast was a very pleasant surprise; a god selection of cereals in plastic containers, a small fridge containing yogurts and small bowls of FRESH fruit salad, bread and toasters, ham, hard boiled eggs, sliced cheese and croissants (though these are all pre packaged). There's tea and if you prefer coffee, you can use an individual cafetiere, excellent choice for a hotel like this. The tables are white, spotless, the cutlery and crockery all matching and the general atmosphere friendly. The girl who welcomed us was extremely pleasant, helpful and friendly. She told us all the rooms on the ground floor are singles; there isn't a lift and we were on the third floor, which wasn't a problem but could be for some people. The main issue was that there is no air conditioning so it was hot, but for one night it was bearable. Overall we found this excellent value for money, at £55 for the night, for two of us. Yes, the area is pretty rundown and not very appealing, but it was convenient for what we wanted and at this price we were pleasantly surprised. There is a car park but get there early and reverse in as it's pretty tight. Overall though, a very reasonable little hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back but was still very noisy - my husband had to shut the window at about 6am a...

I feel that I can only recommend this B and B to a college student traveling on a budget. I was traveling with my elderly parents. There is NO elevator and they were given a room on the 2nd floor. The stairs are very steep and it was really a terrible match. This is not a good hotel for families or the elderly.

My room was on the street-side of the hotel. Be prepared to wake up at 5:00 because the traffic is non-stop and very loud. The area around the B and B had zero charm or interest. I went running both nights and felt not particularly safe in this neighborhood.

On the positive side, the breakfast was wonderful and the attendant there was warm and welcoming.

Room Tip: Get a room at the back or you will not be able to sleep past 5:00 am.

As a mature student on a fixed budget it is challenging finding accommodation that delivers all first class amenities on a shoe string budget. The Malago is owned and managed by a lovely Bristol family. They welcomed me after my long drive and made sure I was confortable in my room. The building is newer and was built to be a B&B. It offers an off road car park and internet without additional charges! I have stayed in many hotels in Bristol that charge by the day for these perks which I feel should be standard. The room was clean and brightly decorated. with windows that opened and heat that worked! The shower is large compared to many B&Bs where they have made a toilet and shower fit into a closet. Breakfast is continental, self serving, and casual. They serve ample amounts of protein rich food as cheese, and ham, and yogurts, fruit, juice, and a wide variety of cereals and breads. Yes, it is located in a not so nice neighborhood but it is a safe, secure, comfortable, clean, friendly, and affordable place to stay when in Bristol on a budget.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the parking lot are quieter

I stayed here on my own in a single room on the top floor. It was ok; the carpet was slightly stained, as were those in the common areas. Otherwise the room and bathroom were clean.
The small light in the bathroom didn't work, nor did the bedside lamp - I got a replacement light bulb but it still didn't work.
Breakfast was very basic - just cereal and toast, but nothing fresh - all cheap supermarket stuff. Since it's not very cheap for a B&B you would expect a bit more.
There is wifi but the signal wasn't always strong enough to reach the top floor.
The staff were friendly overall.
As other people have said, it has the feel of a hostel; and the neighbourhood doesn't look very nice, lots of cheap shops and businesses, so nothing do to and it looks a bit run-down.
