“No atmosphere, poor rather strange service, food not special”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

My starter of crayfish salad was tasteless and badly presented. Rabbit was actually good. Rest of food ok but not special. Atmosphere in restaurant poor, just a shabby big room. Waitress ignored us when we wanted more wine.
Not really the setting for a romantic night out.

“Poor booking procedure, DREADFUL customer service, miserly portions”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2012

This restaurant is now called No.4 Clifton Village.

When we booked, the receptionist took both our email address and telephone number down wrong AND took a booking for an evening the restaurant was not open. As a result the hotel could not contact us and we arrived for a special occasion meal to be turned away. This was a Groupon deal with only a week to run. Despite this, the manager did not ring us back as promised to rearrange. I chased and first spoke to an assistant manager who implied we were mistaken and had never had a booking on that evening. When I eventually got hold of the manager, she admitted that all 3 mistakes were the restaurant's but refused to extend the deal for more than a week despite us saying we would not be available. Her reason - 'we want to make money on it'. Maybe not what you admit to a customer you have mucked about!? We were forced to cancel another arrangement to be able to take advantage of our prepaid meal. Even on the rebooking the hotel was weak and did not send confirmation as requested until we rang and chased them.

On the night, the dining area was elegant, the waiting staff pleasant and helpful, but the portions were meagre to say the least. Mains delivered with no veg which were charged at £3 per ITEM. The food in itself was nice, but I had to eat again later in the evening as I was hungry, and our meal was allegedly £66 worth of food! I am a slight woman and NOT a big eater! We found this very poor value even for our Groupon and would not go back.

“Lovely”

A slight air of shabby sheak, but service, atmosphere and food really good, flavours well balanced & multilayered. Would happily return.

“Superb food but take your own atmosphere!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

We visited on a Wednesday evening, and were surprised to find the diningroom contained only one other couple, like us on a voucher, and a generally low-key rather than genial atmosphere pervading. The menu though limited had some delicious-sounding options ~ the only fish dish wasn't available but the alternative offered was excellent. Both our starters (scallops) and our mains were very good indeed. As our meal-offer was prepaid we expected to pay only for our bottle of wine with option to tip, as is usual in such situations, but the bill arrived with a service charge of £7.40 added, representing 10% of the cost if selected from the menu without the voucher. Which means the bill for two - very nice but essentially unexceptional - two-course meals plus a £25 bottle of prosecco would have been £74.40. Given the number of excellent restaurants in Clifton with more character & ambiance that doesn't really represent good value.

“A class act!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2012 via mobile

This is the second time we have eaten at this restaurant. It is relatively small (about 30 covers) & is in the front room of a lovely Georgian building in Clifton. Starters chosen were crayfish salad with harissa, crispy duck & Pak choi & ham hicks terrine. Mains were salmon with herb crust, pork belly with fabulous crackling, chicken breast & stir fried rib eye steak. To finish 2 had cheese boards, 1 had spicy orange treacle tart & 1 chocolate tort. There weren't many people in tonight so the atmosphere was a bit thin but we were in a party of four so it didn't matter. The service was efficient but not in your face and the food was gorgeous. we were using a voucher, so it was a bargain but whilst the menu isn't cheap, the food is tasty, well cooked and ultimately sufficient. if you fancy a great meal in a lovely setting then give no4 a try
