Description: At The Cowshed we bring the taste of the countryside to the city. For us the most important thing is knowing where and how food is produced. We focus on the quality of the farming or production methods and the ethics and integrity of the grocer, breeder or supplier.

This place is just great, particularly the early bird. £10 for steak, wine and chips. This has the be the tastiest and best value EB in Bristol (and far beyond)

We had a superb Sunday lunch at this restaurant - great quality food - 5 of us had roast beef, one the lamb and one the pork belly, with really well prepared vegetables - great roast potatoes!
5 of us had really good home-cooked puddings, recommend the apple and rhubarb crumble.
2 bottles of wine and a couple of beers - total bill was £198 which works out at £28 per head.
Friendly service and buzzing atmosphere.

If you enjoy flashing your cash or you're a wealthy businessman looking for somewhere that is oh-so-trendy to take your mistress to for an evening meal, by all means go to the over-heated, over-priced, and over-rated Cowshed.

The food is good, no question, but in the evening, as others have said, it is very expensive for what it is. The waiters are... how do I put this... a bit sarky, and a bit poncey. There is no burger on the menu in the evening, which for somewhere that calls itself a grill, let alone "Cowshed" is unacceptable in this day and age in my opinion.

The seating area looks good, but is cramped with awkward chairs and is usually too stuffy, something more than one of the restaurants housed in the traditional buildings along the "strip" are guilty of.

So yes, they will rinse you for a LOT of cash to get a filling meal. As I say, it's a place to be seen eating, but if you're serious about eating, you should see a few other places first. Bristol has too many excellent value restaurants to be paying over the odds for a slightly dodgy ambience and service here.

Stick to for lunch though.

Lovely food and service, but not as amazing as you would hope for the price and the hype. Probably much better when less crowded. Would definitely go back there though.

If there was a setting between Average and Very Good, it's what I would've selected.

The Very Good:
The Cow Shed has a fantastic lunch offer of a three course set menu for £10 which I recommend to anyone on Whiteladies at lunchtime - the food is first class and given the other offerings in this area at this time of day for a similar price, the Cow Shed is the way to go. I believe they also do an early-bird dinner menu along similar lines.

The Less than Average but not quite Poor:
Dinner, however, is another matter entirely. I've been to the Cowshed quite a few times for lunch over the last year or two and only ever had good things to say until I went for a late dinner the last week. While the food was as good, it's worth noting that after 7 pm your meal is nearly three times the price, not including wine. I am perfectly happy to pay more for a good meal, but given the price of it, I expected the full package. The useless dinner service was bordering on non-existent and has put me off from ever going back for an evening meal.

Bottom line - by all means, make the most of lunch, but if you're heading for a nice and pricey evening meal, I'd look elsewhere.
