Owner description: Woburn Abbey has been the home of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford for nearly 400 years and is now home to the 15th Duke and his family. Alongside the world class collection of art, the house contains the fascinating stories of the people who have shaped the history of both the Abbey and the nation; including the ‘creation ‘ of Afternoon Tea. The Gardens, with a twenty year restoration programme, are of equal splendour with 28 acres of Repton designs to be explored and discovered.Throughout the year Woburn also hosts a series of events including: classic cars rallies, The Woburn Abbey Garden Show, summer theatre, the country fair, vintage airplane rally and autumn deer walks.

Came here recently to have an afternoon out,was pleasant but nothing riveting,a tad expensive for what you get,a typical place with lots of history and pictures adorn the walls, the old paintings seem to tell a story unlike the modern ones which to be honest I doubt anyone's really interested in ! It's ok for whining away a couple of hours.

Went here on the 7th April & had a lovely time. As you enter you have a fairly long drive round to the car park but it takes you through the deer park. As we were driving along a deer ran across in front of us to the other side, then stopped to graze, it was a great photo opportunity. Huge car park with toilet facilities. To get in you have to go through the shop & then out into a court yard. Straight in front was a restaurant, reasonably priced, cream tea was lovely & so was the coffee cake & flapjack. The Abbey was lovely to walk round, plenty of guides to speak to if you had any questions. Have to say a few guides looked unapproachable & didn't even speak to you when you entered the room which I found a bit rude when I had acknowledged them. Lots of things to look at, sometimes you didn't know what to look at first! As the family who own this still live here you can only see a certain amount of rooms, we even saw their puppy playing outside in the gardens from one of the windows we were looking out of. Later on when we went to the courtyard where the antiques centre is you can see the back of the abbey with the formal gardens which is blocked off from the public, by then we could see children playing on the grass with the puppy. Lots of out buildings to look in containing exhibitions etc. Pretty gardens to walk round, the Chinese Dairy looked impressive. One of my favourite rooms to look at was the last room before you leave, a room completely done out in shells, it was so unexpected but very pretty.

Visited the Abbey with rather low expectations but how wrong was I? It is a truly beautiful building packed with interesting artefacts. Also got to view in part the private quarters of the present Duke. The staff are mines of information and made the visit so very interesting. My only criticism was of the food in the Flying Duchess Cafe. Looked as though it had been on the shelf for ever and tasted that way. However all in all an excellent day out.

A terrific place to go with really friendly and knowledgeable room stewards. We were lucky enough to go on the first weekend of the year that the house was open so we had the "full monty" with actors in period costume telling the story of the Russell family. One thing that I was VERY impressed with was when we were in the long gallery that has display cases of small items I asked a passing actress if she knew where the painted ostrich egg was. She stayed in character for her reply and said "that was after my time here but if you ask one of the stewards I am sure they will tell you". You can't get better than that. Very impressive house and gardens.
