“Brilliant food and excellent service”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Have been to the Peacock on a couple of occasions and have always come away looking forward to my next visit. We went in December for my mum's birthday and brought with us my 4 month old niece. The staff were very accommodating to all our family's needs and made us feel incredibly welcome. I live in London and am lucky enough to dine out regularly for my job; and yet feel the food you get at the Peacock is vastly superior to a number of dinners I have had for double the price in the capital.

I particularly recommend the black pudding for starter!

What a fantastic venue for a stay or lunch or dinner. We had an excellent lunch here during the Xmas / New year period. From start to finish our experience was nothing short of perfect. First we we invited to the bar area for pre dining drinks. The excellent and comprehensive wine menu included a special 2 bottles of superb wine for £150. This might sound expensive but for all the wine experts out there this represented very good value for money. The food was excellent as was the service. Throughout our stay the log fires were kept fueled such that the building was warm throughout. The management and staff we brilliant and I would not hesitate to recommend this establishment to anyone. Judge for yourself and vist.

Very nice old buliding, lovely decor.

However thats where the good points end. As soon as we walked in we felt we were pressured to have lunch by 3 seperate members of staff. There was no time to relax or think as they were all over us like a rash. Our 6 year old just wanted a bowl of chips ( £4.25 for about 12 chips) but the waitress kept suggesting he tried various other things with it and in the end she got her way as he went for 2 rations of bacon at which point the price went up fom £4.25 to £6.95!
My partner and I opted for the £6.95 club sandwich which, whilst tasty, was presented in bread about as big as my thumb. Total rip off all round.
The staff seemed desperate to get us to eat, the barman was about as warm and welcoming as a dose of flu and the food was horrendously over priced. Lets just say we will not be returning.

Very disappointing stay, if you want to be ripped off, then it's the place for you! Booked fireside dinner but the lack of logs being put on the fire it was going out and the Rooms are freezing cold also promised a fan heater twice that never appeared, food is below standard, frozen chips, low quality meat, given 2 small water biscuits with cheese as my dessert. pinot grigio £10 a glass at the bar, the special offer wine in the bar £150.00 a bottle. Cannot get a decent picture on tv in room. Did not have breakfast as the food not to our standard and also thought you would get a hot cooked breakfast. We were charged for drinks in the bar that we did not have and had to pay for them. We were looking forward to our stay as this hotel has been awarded AA 3 stars.

We visited the Peacock the first weekend in December. A lovely hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. Dinner was amazing and especially for me being diabetic when the chef prepared a special sugarless dessert for me on the two evenings of our stay. In our booking information the breakfast was described as a buffet breakfast, a better description would have been a cold buffet breakfast or even continental breakfast the only two hot items included in the bed and breakfast rate were porrdige and waffles. Hot dishes eg. boiled eggs, bacon and egg the usual breakfastly items were charged extra to your account. Nevertheless we enjoyed our Ruby Wedding celebration at the Peacock Mrs.Jean Butterworth,Todmorden, West Yorkshire

Room Tip: a garden view rooms are quieter

This is a lovely old inn, and I loved staying there.I look forward to staying there again as I make frequent business trips to the area. Because it is a little out of the way, and nothing much goes o around there, the clientele seem to be quiet and self-contained people.

The restaurant is out of bounds unless there is an event that justifies the price tag, but the bar food is as good as other places' restaurants.

We are regular visitors to the Peacock and have always found the staff to be welcoming and friendly with nothing being too much trouble. If ever the bar is full we have been well looked after in the lounge. The food is delicious and this is one of our favourite places to spend an evening.
