“Nice break”
Reviewed June 28, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from a 2 night break, room was comfortable, location good, we ate the 1st night and the food was nice. We missed breakfast the 1st morning as we were informed it was from 7.30 till 8am we felt for a leisure break this was way to early however when we asked the following day about breakfast we were informed it was 7.30 till 10am. The breakfast was good. All in all we have enjoyed our stay. Staff are all very pleasant.

We stayed for one night and did not eat dinner. We were out in Bakewell and couldn't find anywhere closer to stay which didn't require a 2-night minimum. The Grouse and Claret is perfectly okay but nothing special. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was nicely decorated. The bathroom could use some maintenance. The toilet seat was wonky and the shower didn't work very well: when you pop the button which is supposed to make the water come out of the shower instead of the tap, most of it continues to come out of the tap. The shower screen had no rubber seal left, so we ended up with a huge puddle on the floor. Breakfast was very good. If we'd paid about £70 - £80, I'd have been perfectly happy, but at over £120, it's vastly overpriced.

Must start this review by saying that all of the staff that we encountered were friendly, polite & efficient, it's important to note that this opinion is solely related to the quality of our room, that being room 01.
We stayed for one night having had a lovely day walking around Chatsworth & the local area, we planned to stay the night locally so that we could return & spend the following day visiting the house & gardens.
When we entered the restaurant it was clearly very popular, very tastefully decorated & clean.
It started to go down hill when we were shown through the door to the accommodation, it was like a time warp in both decor & condition!
I'll add here that we made a late booking having kept an eye on the weather & only paid £45 for the room & breakfast, even at that price our room was disappointing.
The room was above the kitchen/working area & thus was noisy, our main window faced out over a courtyard come staff parking area with a number of air conditioning/extraction units just a few metres from our window but judgement was held until later.
We went down into the restaurant & had a good meal, upon returning to our room the kitchen noise had begun to lower but the fan(s) noise was still overly apparent.
Added to this as the night darkened an extremely bright security light on the wall opposite & above our room lit up our room all night even with the curtains fully closed.
Whether it was because the room was above the kitchen it was also very warm but the window had to be kept closed to lower the drone of the fans.
In the morning we showered early using the mixer hose off the bath taps having read the notice warning that the hot water could run out at any time & if so would take approximately 30 minutes to warm up again. it was also noticeable that the bathroom windows were sealed & could not be opened, whilst the bathroom was large it was of very poor quality.
In summary I'd say that this particular room is not of a worthy standard to be used for accommodation given it's position & standard.
My opinion would be that although the restaurant was of a good standard the company need to put more emphasis on the rooms, or at least room 1(01). My question would be why the company didn't decorate the rooms to the same standard as the restaurant & if they did someone needs to remind them that they forgot room 1(01)!

Room Tip: Avoid room 01!

My girlfriend and I have frequented almost all of the Marstons Inns chains in the Peak District now. We found the Grouse and Claret to be a great stay!
They called us as we were on our way (we were running a little late) just to confirm we were still coming and also to let us know that food would not be served for much longer as it was a Sunday night. This was very useful info for us and most appreciated.
The hotel is quite low down so signal strength was not great for my phone, which didn’t concern me too much as it meant I had a little peace and quiet. The surroundings are very pleasant. There is a busy road adjacent to the Grouse and Claret and our room was facing this. We were not disturbed by any vehicle noise come Monday morning and had a very peaceful evening. There were helpful guides and magazines for the area which gave us ample ideas on where to visit whilst staying in the Peak District.
The building was well maintained with the usual large car parks so no worries about there being no spaces. There was also a camping area close by.
Breakfast in the morning was in the conservatory area, it very good and well stocked.
All in all, another great stay at a Marstons Inn, I would highly recommend for all travellers, but especially for those interested in visiting Chatsworth House or surrounding areas. Reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Having used the Grouse and Claret for three nights whilst attending a Wedding at Hassop Hall I admit to mixed feelings.
We stayed on the Caravan Site behind the property, run by the hotel, whilst son and daughter were in a hotel room. They were very satisfied with the hotel but we had reservations about the facilities on the site. One toilet and two showers for the men in the single toilet block for a site capable of holding up to 70 campers in a popular tourist area is completely inadequate.
The breakfast in the hotel was fine although thin to non existent if a traditional English breakfast isn't to your taste. The price compares favourably with the one offered in the Peak Shopping Centre just across the road. A voucher offering a 20% discount for a breakfast, but only on one day out of the three, is short-sighted as those who book for a single night receive the same privilege. The response to my question as to why this uneven policy exists met with a terse and unsatisfactory answer, from someone who appeared to be in a senior position, "Because that is how it is!" I hasten to add that all the other staff were extremely pleasant and helpful throughout our stay.
As members of both the Caravan Club and, for many, many, years, also the Camping and Caravanning Club we are in a position to compare costs and facilities and sadly the £20 per night for this site does not come any where near the same value for money.

Booked the Grouse & Claret while on our trip around the UK through Late Rooms. The room (02) was really nice and the bathroom had a bath over the shower. The restaurant meals were nice and the service fast. We enjoyed it so much we went back on Late Rooms and rebooked for two further nights. We had room (01) which had a bathroom as big as the bedroom. Overall we were happy with our stay and would definitely stay again.
