“Dreadful food”

Please take note of this review if you want a " GOOD Meal ". Ordered the American grill. Well, the corn on the cob was so over cooked it was like eating mushy peas. The sausages were deep fried to death and the chicken was so overcooked I was about to order a second portion so I could re-sole my shoes. One good thing to note was the serving staff were friendly. I hope the management take note and retrain the chef as it seem from previous revews its gone down hill since the beginning of this year.

Not a bad place for a meal but was quite put off by the mouse bait boxes underneath some of the seats in the dining room!!!!! Yikes! Rather surprising that this is so obvious but then again, it gave me a reason to not go back!

We have now stayed here twice, the premises is well sited in Rowsley in Derbyshire next to a factories outlet site and in outstanding countryside.
The hotel/ pub so well organized that it makes you wish you had shares in the company.
Tne rooms were clean and sufficient for a stay, tne restaurant was everything you could ask for, sensibly priced, clean and probably one of the most efficient premises we have stayed in.
The staff were friendly and so efficient that I had to congratulate the manager Jon.
Would I reccomend here yes I certainly would no complaints whatsoever, well done Jon running friendly, efficient premises.
This level of praise is rare for me.

We have eaten here three times (we have never had an overnight stay) since the recent change in management and redecoration, having eaten there many times previously, with much pleasure, over a period of several years. On the first of these last three visits we felt the standard of meal and organisation had gone down but gave them the benefit of the doubt in view of the recent changes. However, our subsequent visits have confirmed those impressions. This is a great pity since we have always found the Grouse and Claret a great place to meet up with my brother ad family who travel up from the south for the day. We really feel we will have to find somewhere else now.

So what has changed? Previously the place gave the impression of being run like clockwork, run by an older couple with a firm hand but we always had the impression the staff were happy to see you and serve you and chat to you. Now they are pleasant enough but going through the motions, as unfortunately one sees at so many chain establishments these days. The service of food and drink is now quite a lot slower, even at quiet times as yesterday, in the middle of Monday afternoon.

Presentation of the food now lacks pride and care. Yesterday my wife chose one of the more expensive "Specials", a beef and mushroom stroganoff with rice. This came as a sloppy mess, just dumped on the plate. I chose a previous favourite of mine at the Grouse, ham with fried eggs and chips. Previously this had been a good thick slice of ham, obviously hand-carved as stated on the menu, with well-cooked eggs. Yesterday I had a thin slice of what appeared to be sandwich ham, although it was quite tasty. One egg was hard.

The desserts, however, were fine, though they took some time to come.

Did we complain? No, partly because this was a wedding anniversary treat but mainly because I felt it would make no difference. There has been a culture change at the Grouse.

Having said that, there seems to be no shortage of customers. Possibly because it is a large place with good parking and the proximity of the retail outlet, plus the campsite. I don't know of any other place locally where you can always get in with a large party and where the food is not expensive. But it is such a pity it has gone downhill.

We booked this last minute and were pleased with the standard of the room for the price. Lovely decor and thoughtful touches. We did not eat in the pub itself apart from breakfast, which was nice, but the meals looked very nice whilst we were in the bar. My only criticism is that the pillows were lumpy!!

Very disappointing, and I wasn't expecting gastro cooking, just a decent salad and a nice piece of salmon would have been nice. Instead I was given a plate of wet lettuce,a tomato that had seen better days and a portion of salmon, although generous was inedible. My only positive note is that the serving staff were very pleasant and helpful.
