The Old Station House Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #3 of 5 Rowsley B&B and Inns

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay In the Old Station House. Excellent chain pub a short stroll away. Room on the small side but with a big comfortable bed. We had room at the rear, we can imagine that the rooms overlooking the road are a little noisy with the windows open. Excellent breakfast served in the small dining room around a single large table.

My husband and I needed to be in Dublin and we decided to drive there. My daughter booked us a room at The Old Station house as Rowsley is exactly half-way. It was perfect. The Old Station House is a dream. We had a lovely, very comfortable room, and despite being at the front of the house, we heard no traffic. When we woke in the morning, the field in front of the B&B had sheep in it, and the fog made it all look quite idyllic. Breakfast was superb. As for the location, Rowsley may very well have become my favourite spot in England. Chatsworth is just up the road, as is Haddon Hall, and there are a 1000 perfect hiking spots just on your doorstep. Ask Vicky and Maureen for advice on what to do and we guarantee you'll have a fabulous break, in any season! We give 10/10! William and Clare

Located just off the A6 and minutes away from Chatsworth House and Bakewell, The Old Station House is a comfortable and friendly Bed & Breakfast in a great location.
The room itself was very clean with a good en-suite shower room/WC and tea/coffee making facilities, bottled water and biscuits; a nice touch. The information pack was very well presented and included details of local walks, local restaurants and, usefully, bus timetables. The free wi-fi worked flawlessy and there was a TV/DVD player and access to a good selection of DVDs.
Special mention should be given to the breakfasts which are wonderful; very generous and made with locally sourced ingredients. As vegetarians we felt very well catered for and it was lovely to chat with the other guests around the dining table. Owner Victoria was very attentive at all times and very knowledgeable on local history.
There are plenty of good pubs and restaurants in the immediate area; we can recommend the Grouse & Claret in Rowsley itself and the Whitworth Park Hotel in nearby Darley Dale.
All in all we were very happy and would not hesitate in staying there again in the future.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper it might be worth asking for one of the rear rooms as traffic noise at...

Our room was quite small and overlooked the road, which meant noisy traffic at night when the windows were open (needed because the weather was warm). The ensuite too is really cosy! Loud snoring from the next room could be heard despite closed door. On the other hand it is well located and the breakfasts were excellent. Mother Maureen was particularly welcoming.

This property is really well-located if you are planning to visit Chatsworth, as I was; it's also just a few metres from the Rowsley Factory Outlet Centre: possibly a benefit! On the other hand, I could not help comparing the accommodation of the night before... Premier Inn cost £29 (plus £8 for full breakfast) vs. £50 - sole occupancy of a double room in both cases. Although the business models are different, I suspect the margins might be the same.

Premier Inn bedroom - good size, reasonable view of trees from first floor window; excellent quality mattress and pillows; The Old Station House - fair size, quite good view of farmland from first floor window beyond the B road; excellent mattress and pillows. One difference was that The Old Station House provided noticeably higher quality towels.

Premier Inn noise level - almost non-existent; The Old Station House - two sources of noise: from the road, as I had a road-side room and given the temperature had to keep the window open plus internal noise transmission; the gap beneath the door does 'carry' sound easily. With regard to the road noise, it's surprising as to the quantity of vehicles and volume and might well bother some guests. For me, it was acceptable.

Premier Inn room decor - homogenous but tasteful; you know what you will encounter wherever you stay with this group; The Old Station House - the rooms are quite tastefully appointed, including a DVD player besides televison and easy-to-operate wifi. Whereas the Premier Inn has a tub as well as shower, The Old Station House has only a shower - and that, along with wash basin and toilet, is confined to a small space en-suite. Another key difference is that the Premier Inn is 'group-designed' whereas The Old Station House had Joseph Paxton as architect! Although I must say I did not notice any Paxtonian touches; he was involved at Chatsworth but this property was designed for the station-master and the factory outlet car park occupies the station yard.

Premier Inn friendliness of staff - good; several encountered; The Old Station House - assume it was the owner, Victoria Friend, that I met and she was helpful, e.g. we would like to stay in the area soon but will have a dog with us and she provided details of suitable accommodation. One indicator of difference was that, in the morning, I was asked whether I was cold during the night because the higher tog value winter duvet had just been switched for the summer ones - and that she had forgotten to mention there was a blanket stored under the bed (I had noticed). Breakfast at The Old Station House, however, is particularly commended: I had salmon and scrambled egg - excellent; the toast was kept hot by a heated brick underneath. Actually, perhaps, the dining room window 'suggests' Paxton. Unlike a Premier Inn, you will share the dining room table with other guests: this will please some and not others; you might encounter jollity as I did. Would I recommend The Old Station House? Yes although do try to get a bedroom NOT on the road-side.

Booked a last minute couple of nights here at the Old Station House.

It's a very comfortable B&B with a great breakfast and friendly hosts, Vicky and her mother. The 'welcome pack' in the room has lots of information about walks in the vicinity and sample menus from some of the nearby restaurants. Breakfast was cooked to order (including coddled eggs, which I've not seen anywhere else). There are DVDs available to borrow if wanted. The house is on the main road so might be a little noisy in the front-facing rooms, but the double-glazing is good. Parking is a few yards away from the house.

Would definitely consider coming here again if we were in the area.

I came to Derbyshire for a two-day Tudor cookery course at Haddon Hall, and spent one night at the Old Station House.

After I booked on-line, I was sent a letter to confirm the booking, which included accurate directions to find the B&B. The welcome on arrival was very friendly and efficient. The room was neat and well-decorated, and although the en suite was quite small, it was also very clean and tidy. I didn't end up spending much time in the room, but there was free WiFi (with the log-in details included in the welcome folder in the room), and a TV up on a high shelf, making it easy to watch while lying on the bed. The TV only has four channels, but there's a good selection of DVDs available to borrow. There were also leaflets for plenty of local attractions, and details of locals walks.

Breakfast the next day was absolutely delicous (especially the sausage), and as a single traveller it was especially nice to be seated on a shared table with the other guests rather than have to eat alone.

I would definitely stay at the Old Station again.
