Banning House Lodge
Ranked #1 of 1 Two Harbors B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 6, 2007

My husband and I just enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Banning House Lodge. We were looking for a peaceful weekend getaway and that is what we got! The lodge itself is very charming and although built in 1910, it has been appropriately updated so you do not get the feeling that you are staying in someone's old house! Be forewarned: this lodge is definitely for those looking to disconnect from everyday life. That means no TV's, no radio's, no internet, no clocks, no alarms! The lodge sits high up on the hill from downtown Two Harbors, from where you can get a great view of the area. It is close enough to walk down to the downtown area within a few minutes, but far enough that when the Cinco De Mayo partying started, it did not disturb us at all. Speaking of the walk to and from downtown, several of the other reviews mentioned that the walk was a bit far--that is only true if you never do any exercise other than walking from your house to your car! For anyone who is even a little active, it is a nice five minute stroll!

We stayed in room 3, which shared a back patio with room 2. Our neighbors were respectful of the shared space, but I can see how less thoughtful neighbors could have disturbed us with talking out on the patio early morning or late night. Rooms 2, 3, 4 and 5 are on the main walkway and patio area of the lodge and therefore receive the most back and forth traffic. Everyone seems to be aware of this and is pretty quiet, but if you are sensitive to noise you may want to request the "Crow's Nest" room, which is above the main den, or one of the rooms not adjacent to the main house. The Continental breakfast every morning easily exceeded minimum standards and was very fulfilling and included: a variety of fresh fruit, a variety of bagels and english muffins, cottage cheese, yogurt, several cold cereals, muffins, and a variety of condiments.

The staff was very courteous and low-key, to the point that it almost seemed like we were staying at a friends house and not a lodge at all! We are already planning a trip back to do some mountain biking, and would not consider staying anywhere else!

My wife and I stayed the Banning House in May 1994, exactly one year after our first child was born. The best get-a-away new parents could have ever asked for. (We left our son on the mainland with family). We are now going back to relive that special moment again; sans the kids. This time we're going to bring home the recipe for "Buffalo Milk"! We loved the Banning House Lodge. Too bad they don't serve more than breakfast because you don't want to leave the incredible views.
You have to eat at the one restaurant in town (good) or buy picnic food from the store (poor selection). Good continental breakfast, but wished they had hot items. They sell wine & beer onsite.

The Lodge is very charming- great patios, and it was fun to hang out and play games in the living room. Our cottage was perfect for the 4 of us (kids are 11 & 13), but I'd try the Crow's Nest for 2 next time.

For animal lovers- they have plenty of cats to pet, the hummingbirds were out in force, and a bison walked right by the window!!!

We rented kayaks went north, just around the harbor, and found a perfect little beach to snorkel in the kelp forest (incredible clarity). Also, hiked up above the beach to see even more awesome views.

Our family of five spent a lovely off-season weekend at the Banning House, which we picked specifically for the no TV/phone/pool ambiance. With temperatures in the mid-sixties we were comfortable kayaking in swimsuits, though snorkeling required wetsuit rental--for a very reasonable $15 per person.

Only two other rooms were occupied so we felt like it was our very own large, old-fashioned beach house. The do-it-yourself policy, from an honor system open kitchen where you write your own tab to the ample but cozy living room where we built a fire and played board games together, is perfect for families.

You're minutes from the beach, and can see just about everyone in town from the front porch, so it's a great way to set older children free while still keeping an eye on them.

The continental breakfast is the usual & all you need, and the one restaurant in Two Habors is surprisingly good despite having a complete monopoly.

Next time I'd bring more of our own food--you can use the Banning House fridge--and take advantage of the public grills.

Banning House Lodge was really a wonderful, quiet and romantic place to stay for our honeymoon. Kate, the assistant manager, took great care of us and even packed up a romantic little picnic lunch with chocolate-dipped strawberries! The main house and our guest room was immaculate and lovely (antiques and an air of quiet relaxation with no phones, no TV -- it was great!) The view from the sunny deck was beautiful, too. We look forward to returning soon!

We spent a few nights at the Banning House for our 10th anniversary. My parents return each year and had recommended we go. We stayed in room #3, opening out to the courtyard. We had a lovely view of Cat Harbor and the weather was stunning. We had a portable fireplace that kept us toasty warm at night. The day we arrived they were putting out many pots full of colorful spring flowers. A footpath down the hill leads to a very small general store, snackbar (we liked everything we tried and the service was friendly), and a restaurant. The restaurants food was excellent and moderately priced. The drinks were quite expensive ($6. for a coffee drink or mixed). I have found most "continental breakfasts" uninspiring... but here they not only had the obligatory bagels and muffins, but also cereal (hot and cold), yogurt, granola and cut fruit. Would definately return.

WE just got back from a quick weekend stay at the Banning House & Two Harbors! Our first time to the secluded side of the island and after doing so I have to say I would never stay in Avalon again after staying in Two Harbors and the Banning House.

Two Harbors is a beautiful setting where the 2 harbors come within a few hundred yards of meeting! Its a real Small town, but with all you need for a great break from it all. A small grill stand for bfast and lunch, a nice but way overpriced seafood place for dinner, as well as a outdoor patio bar by beach and bar at night.

Theres Snorkeling, Kayaking, Fishing, Hiking, Mountain Biking, or just sitting by the beachs, valleys, mountains, and cliffs that make up the area aurrounding two harbors. And most of the time you will have the place to yourself....its quite!!! witha Capital Q! great for starry nights and beach walks, long hikes, and a break from it all.

Back to the Banning House.....
We stayed in Room #8! I would jhighly recommend rom 37 or #8 as they have the best views and are the most private by far! the VIEW ws drop dead gorgeous! The staff aty the hotel was great, very accomadting. There was beer and wine in the Fridge for your convience (anything is a long 5 min walk up or down a big Hill) that you can take and just write down your Room #! Nice breakfast of fruit and bagels, great views from all around the property, I would say almost all the rooms are Well Worth it!

Anyway Its not a Real 5 Star hotel but for where you are they have everything you need and more!
