We were visiting relatives in Spezzano Albanese in Calabria and spent the first night in Cosenza, which was a 45 minute+ drive and just too far away and inconvenient. Our relatives recommended this local hotel just down the hill from Spezzano Albanese at Spezzano Albanese Terme and we were glad we relocated.
There are nice grounds around the hotel, including a large health spa and condominium units used by Italians for vacations. The sea coast is not far away and there is a marvelous (absolutely remarkable) archeological museum with Greek artifacts near Sibari. Across a field is a wonderful restaurant (Oasi di Cass Bianca) where they do a delightful tasting of seven local traditional dishes. We enjoyed Spezzano Albanese, a quiet Calabrian town, where we were extremely well fed by Italian relatives and did genealogical research at the Municipio building.
Calabrian hotels are generally not very fancy. The American Hotel is fairly large, in good condition and quite clean. We had a nice room with a good bath and quiet. We enjoyed a drink at the bar and had an adequate breakfast the next morning. We did not have other meals at the hotel, but the Armacord Ristorante nearby is quite good. The staff had limited English skills, but were very friendly and helpful. This is a good hotel, extremely reasonable and a GREAT value. We would recommend the American Hotel if staying in that area of Calabria.
