Quite a climb (driving) with plenty of stunning views along the way ! You suddenly hit the plateau of lush, green agricultural land... quite spectacular. Also visited a monastery and the caves. Well worth the visit !!!

A nice area and a good introduction to rural Crete. Easy to self guide a day trip from coastal resorts.
Visit the windmills, Diktheon cave and the small villages. Don't miss the Mon viviani monastery and Vulture centre too
We did however, have a strange experience at Kronos cave near Tzermiado ( not well signed anymore) where we were shot at by an unknown hunter!!!! bullets wizzing over our heads in the trees whilst we walked- very scary!

While driving around (and probably best in private vehicle rather than tour bus), you suddenly realise that yes, there's a plain/plateau high up in the hills! You will see some windmills still present, and stone markers where lots more used to be. Lots of lovely tavernas with Cretan cuisine, and opportunity to visit cave where legend suggests birth of Zeus!

We went here as part of a coach tour - it’s a lovely landscape and much cooler than the beaches. Would recommend

Lassithi Plateau has an incredible history. Only getting a road up into it in the 70’s, it has long served as a refuge and centre for the struggle for independence and revolution until Crete gained independence. When you arrive at the rim of the plateau near the old windimills be sure to stop and enjoy the amazing views. There is plenty of history to see –just get a map and guidebook. Don’t forget to look up also for wildlife. At the rim of the plateu you are actually quit high up and will often see eagles or other large birds soaring just over your head, which for us was exilerating. The plateau is very beautiful with all the windmills and the beautiful patchwork of fields.
