“Perfectly at home!”
Reviewed January 31, 2016 for a stay in November 2015

My husband and I stayed here last November as returning guests. We felt perfectly at home as soon as we opened the front door. Lovely warm welcome, with fresh flowers and a basket of eggs.

The gite is well located for sightseeing and exploring Charente Maritime. It's in a lovely peaceful spot which we find very relaxing, and lovely to sit and listen to the birds singing. I have to say that we intended on seeing a little more of the area but we got too comfortable in the courtyard and so didn't venture out as much as last time.

We've rented many houses in France and Le Beau Fief is probably the most well equipped. Thanks for the large supply of logs, we had some very toasty nights sat by that wood burner! What more can we say, a perfect break, and we've just booked again for June with my parents when we're hoping to make use of the lovely pool.

“Some real positives but needed some work and attention”

We stayed here for a week at the end of March 2015. The rental was excellent value for money and booking was very easy through Victoria. Directions provided took us straight to the door and the gite is in a nice rural location with excellent walks for our dogs on the doorstep. I must agree with another reviewer that (in March at least) the gite was VERY cold and took nearly the whole week to warm up. The caretaker was kind enough to bring us extra logs when we ran out. Everything that you could need is there but we thought that it could do with a redecorate and some of the kitchen ' bits and pieces' were not up to standard. Also the bathroom was a little disappointing with the shower head not properly secured so that it was hard to get a proper shower. Overall this is a decent gite which was in a convenient location a nice secure garden area for dogs and/or children but in need of some TLC. We would probably go back but only in the Summer months.

We agree that the upstairs bathroom is outdated, and with this in mind we have kept rental prices very low.

We do give careful consideration to all feedback from guests, and as a result we are pleased to say that there will be a brand new bathroom fitted ready for the 2016 season.

Best Regards,

Richard & Tori

“Fantastic stay!”
Reviewed June 27, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

My partner and I spent a lovely week in June in this fabulous gite.

It’s clear that the owners have put a lot of care into their holiday home. Lots of thoughtful touches are dotted around the place – fresh flowers in every room, a bottle of wine and a basket of eggs on arrival. The property is pretty, very cosy , and we felt truly at home.

The gite facilities are really very good. I love to cook on holiday and found everything I needed in the well-equipped kitchen. Bikes are also supplied by the owners, which we used most days around the local lanes which were more or less car-free.

The courtyard is lovely, high walled with lots of pretty flowers. It was incredibly peaceful to sit out on an evening with a glass of wine and listen to the birds.

Lots of towns and villages within easy reach. The caretaker Mike was very helpful and recommended we visit Coulon and Saintes, which were lovely. We also had a few days out at Saint Jean d’Angely which was a short drive away and had a very nice lake with picnic area.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Le Beau Fief. We feel we stumbled on a real hidden gem and we’ll most definitely be booking again.

“A mixed Bag”
Reviewed April 24, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

After reading all the 5* reviews and seeing the photos we decided to stay here over the Easter holiday.
Arriving at the property on a cold day the whole house was freezing and damp, it probably had not been aired since last season. The house remained very cold and damp for 4-5 days until the wood burner had been used every evening. There is no heating in the downstairs area apart from a wood burner and some logs were left for us. There no heating in the bathroom, so not really appropriate for winter lets.
Good points:
Nice location, very quiet in a small hamlet. There are nice touches around the house, A vase of roses, a bottle of wine and some eggs. Good WiFi, no problems
Bed linen was nice and clean and duvet was warm.
The outside of the property has a nice walled area which catches the sun for most of the day.
Downsides: No heating in the bathroom and the stick on floor tiles are lifting by the door. The showerhead/hose is held up by an old cup hook!. There are no hooks anywhere in the bathroom to hang anything.
The kitchen area needs attention, part of the work top (a piece of ply with some beading) came off whilst we were there and the owners wanted to charge us for it. When challenged, they decided that as a good will gesture they would not. The workmanship in certain areas is poor.
The tongue and groove around the back of the kitchen worktop has not been sealed or battened and has concertinaed so water goes down the back of the wall.
Overall the property needs some maintenance.
I had to clean the bottom of the fridge, the glass door on the oven and one of the worktops when I arrived as they had not been cleaned properly. A cleaning fee was held back from our deposit which I was suprised about as we had left the property in good order, even vacuuming up cobwebs under the stairs.
There is no dishwasher in the property (which we knew about when booking), but the dish drainer is broken. We pointed this out to the Manager/caretaker when he came on our first day, but it was not replaced in the time we were staying. We emailed the Manager/caretaker twice but apparently he did not get our emails (WiFi in France can be flaky)
I am a pretty seasoned traveller to France and have rented lots of properties. I normally pick good ones but on this occasion I wasn’t so happy with my choice.

All in all this was very disappointing

We appreciate feedback from guests as we are making continuous updates to the property to further improve the gite. Your comments about the lack of hooks in the bathroom is helpful, and something we will certainly act upon. Likewise, a heated towel rail is next on our list of improvements.

What is upsetting however, is the lack of credibility surrounding some of your claims. The gite was thoroughly cleaned before your arrival, including the fridge and work surfaces. As for the oven, it was newly purchased two weeks before your stay, so since you were the first guests to use it, your comments regarding the dirty oven door are completely unfounded.

Similarly, when our caretaker came to see you the day after your arrival, there was no mention whatsoever of the drainer being broken . No emails were received from you, despite checking the spam filters. You were left information with not only the caretaker’s email address, but two mobile numbers, a landline, and in the event that you couldn’t get a signal, directions to his property in the next hamlet.

We have never before felt the need to keep back any of the security deposit left by guests. But unfortunately on this occasion, the cottage was left very unclean, and damaged, meaning we took the decision to withold part of the retainer. Sadly, it seems this decision has fuelled the fire for some incredulous allegations on your part.
