I have visited The Plough on a few occasions in the past with my parents, who live locally and visit more regularly. We have always been very happy with the service and the food in the past but this time we definitely weren't.
Firstly, the menu has changed since our last visit - I'm guessing because the chef has changed and the new one isn't quite as talented. You'll still get a reasonable meal at a reasonable price but less choice, far more "processed", and a bit bland.
The service though was very poor and we had to get up from our table twice - once to get drinks and once to get our plates taken away (and desserts and drinks ordered). We definitely got the impression that the waiting staff weren't enjoying what they were doing at all.
The manager (or at least the senior waiter), whom we'd never encountered before, seemed to be overwhelmed and unable to cope with the demands of the job and was definitely happier chatting to his friends at one of the tables. Despite walking right past him on our way out (he was chatting again) we got not so much as a by your leave from him. A "Good Night " would not have hurt!
We were also interested to observe that customers were being turned away because they were "fully booked". If they were, they must have had a large number of cancellations because several tables remained unoccupied whilst we were there. Surely a business such as this can't be turning people away, or is that the plan?
And lastly - the loos, or the Gents at least. A urine infested treat. Probably last cleaned at Christmas, and in need of servicing. Empty loo roll holders; empty tissue box; full bin with cigarette dog ends; broken toilet flushes and the mats under the urinals really need sorting.
Can we have the old Plough back, I don't like the new one?
