I have visited The Plough on a few occasions in the past with my parents, who live locally and visit more regularly. We have always been very happy with the service and the food in the past but this time we definitely weren't.

Firstly, the menu has changed since our last visit - I'm guessing because the chef has changed and the new one isn't quite as talented. You'll still get a reasonable meal at a reasonable price but less choice, far more "processed", and a bit bland.

The service though was very poor and we had to get up from our table twice - once to get drinks and once to get our plates taken away (and desserts and drinks ordered). We definitely got the impression that the waiting staff weren't enjoying what they were doing at all.

The manager (or at least the senior waiter), whom we'd never encountered before, seemed to be overwhelmed and unable to cope with the demands of the job and was definitely happier chatting to his friends at one of the tables. Despite walking right past him on our way out (he was chatting again) we got not so much as a by your leave from him. A "Good Night " would not have hurt!

We were also interested to observe that customers were being turned away because they were "fully booked". If they were, they must have had a large number of cancellations because several tables remained unoccupied whilst we were there. Surely a business such as this can't be turning people away, or is that the plan?

And lastly - the loos, or the Gents at least. A urine infested treat. Probably last cleaned at Christmas, and in need of servicing. Empty loo roll holders; empty tissue box; full bin with cigarette dog ends; broken toilet flushes and the mats under the urinals really need sorting.

Can we have the old Plough back, I don't like the new one?

This is one of those places that can always be relied upon to come up trumps when we just fancy a run out somewhere and 'happen to be passing' - although frequently we plan a rip so that we CAN lunch there. Thoroughly fulfils our criteria of "would we come again?" We would, and we do! Relaxed over a 3-courser today. Not exactly cheap, with a bottle of wine, £61 for two people but well worth it. Everything absolutely fresh, beautifully presented, the chocolate fondant is to die for, and the ambience is splendid. Nobody is sitting so close that you're sharing their bread but it still feels pleasantly full and 'buzzy'. Sometimes we've had a bit of an issue with slow service but no problems today.

We called into one our normally favourite places to eat today , although this time it was only for a drink. I ordered a diet coke, only to be informed sorry we have no diet coke. I then requested a coffee made with either semi or skimmed milk and yet again was informed we have neither. This on a Bank holiday? we left very disappointed and we didn't even get an apology.

We called in for lunch on our homeward journey from the Lake District . Very good first impressions, spacious bar area which felt clam and relaxing. The food was very good and we did not have to wait long for it to arrive. There was just something not quite right about the staff, all young people but not a single smile! It was if they were trying to be so professional they actually came across has having an air of arrogance which is a shame.

My husband and I were stranded with a broken down car in the way the the Lake District and managed to pull it in to the car park. At every point they were incredibly helpful.
Our breakdown cover people appeared to be useless - they suggested a local man who may have been able to help (our cover company pulled through in the end, but options made the situation less stressful)
We had limited time to get food - they cooked the food in brilliant time and served it with a smile.
Once food was served, the breakdown gent turned up - they wrapped up our food so we could eat it whilst on our way.
The food itself was great and the service from the whole team was with outstanding.

And we got to our holiday destination in the end. Hurray!
