“Friendly and welcoming, delicious food”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

We stayed here for a second time last week, whilst celebrating our wedding anniversary and my husband's birthday. We stayed in the ground floor, disabled access family room as this is the only family room in the hotel in which dogs are welcome.
The room and indeed the whole hotel was impeccably clean. The staff are very friendly and attentive and were only too happy to help with special requests, of which we had a good number (our daughter has special needs and I am a strict vegetarian). The chef very kindly made me a starter which I specifically requested (not on the menu) and it was thoroughly delicious.
The food was very good quality, freshly prepared and much of it was supplied locally. The breakfast menu was extensive and we enjoyed trying most of the options.
The ladies who serviced our room arranged our daughter's teddies on her bed to appear as if they were reading a book together. This little touch really made her day, and will bring a smile to my face for years to come :)
The only comment I would make is that as we had our dog with us, we had to eat in a room away from the other guests as we were not allowed to leave him in the bedroom unattended, and he was not allowed in the bar area. It would have been lovely to be able to eat in the bar area with other guests. Although, we did have a whole room to ourselves so it wasn't exactly a hardship, and we were made aware of this at the time of booking.
Wifi access in the room was very patchy although the owner of the hotel did try his best to remedy this for us and we could just about access wifi from the public areas.
We would be very pleased to return for a third visit and I would definitely recommend this friendly and comfortable independent hotel. If we lived closer we definitely be regular dinner guests... just as well, as we would not be able to resist the temptation!

What a fantastic hotel!! The location was excellent with gorgeous views. We chose to stay in one of the executive rooms and I am glad we did. The room was lovely and had everything you needed. The decor was a mix of modern and old world charm and the bed was extremely comfortable. My husband and I noted that we don't usually sleep well in hotels but we had two excellent nights sleep. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful from when we arrived to when we departed. Nothing was too much for them! The food was amazing - we stayed for a meal the first night and it was tasty and cooked extremely well. The breakfast was lovely - all fresh locally farmed produce, you could taste the quality!! Overall I could not fault anything! We had such a wonderful stay we would highly recommend the hotel! We will be back!!

We had a lovely, three night stay at the Pilgrim Hotel for our Wedding Anniversary & would thoroughly recommend it. We had a very nice room with a super view of the Black Mountains. Our only complaint was the noise of people walking around in the rooms above us. We also attended a brilliant Indian cookery course run by the chef at the hotel. As we had never visited Herefordshire before, The Pilgrim Hotel was perfectly situated, with easy access to Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, Hay-on-Wye and the Black Mountains. The food at the hotel was delicious and we always received friendly and helpful advice from the staff.

Room Tip: Make sure nobody is above you!

I stayed here for one night on business. My room was a good size with standard equipment (e.g. hair dryer, tea and coffee making facilities). The double bed was extremely comfortable and provided a very good night's sleep. I had excellent views from my room. The hotel is in a country setting so there was no WiFi but this does provide a sense of a 'retreat'. Staff provided friendly and efficient service. The room was clean and there was the facility to give direct feedback. The fixtures and fittings in the bathroom were a little 'tired'. The sink was cracked and the water pressure in the shower was rather low. Overall, however, this is a hotel that I would recommend for people looking for a friendly, comfortable country setting with good access to pleasant gardens.

We were in Hereford to visit a very sick relative in hospital, and was asked to stay nearby. We arrived late at the hotel and received the most warm welcome. We were able to order a meal which was beautifully prepared, and beyond what we expected. Two relatives arrived from London the next morning just before breakfast finished and joined us, and the staff prepared breakfast for them, with smiles on their faces. More relatives arrived later that day, for an evening meal. Again, the meal was gorgeous, and everyone was extrememly helpful.
A couple of days later, we had to stay in Hereford, after a visit to the hospital, and again, booked and arrived late. The welcome and attentiveness of the staff, was most welcome.
Both rooms were above our expectation. Having such a difficult time in Hereford, it was lovely to have such a warm reception, staff that were so helpful and accommadating, and delicious food. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone. The atmosphere in the hotel is warm and relaxing.
We would definitely recommend this hotel, and wish to stay there under happier circumstances.
The surrounding area is beautiful too, which is a bonus.

Room Tip: The valley rooms have beautiful views

This hotel is in beautiful part of the country and is a good place to stay to enjoy it. The accommodation itself is not stunning and looks a little dated but everything is clean and serviceable. The food is better than the accommodation with a reasonable range of dishes and you can eat in the bar or the restaurant. We were most impressed with the helpfulness of the staff who were working very hard (I think they were one down on the day we stayed and yet remained attentive). We arrived back mid-afternoon after a long walk on Sunday and they rustled up a curry for us without any problem.

Thank you martinb53 for taking the time to review our Hotel, it's always good to get such positive feedback about the staff, food and cleanliness.

The team are a little disappointed however, that after scoring top marks [5's] for Cleanliness, Service & Location, along with good marks for value and sleep quality [4's] that you awarded them an overall 3 based purely on your room being a "little dated".

Our rooms do vary and we generally recommend our larger Valley View rooms. We aren't aware of the room type chosen hope to see you again in the future in a refurbished Valley View room!

Best wishes
Steve

The setting is idylic, the views superb, the food fantastic. so why not 5 stars? well its not quite perfect. we loved it, we got it at a very good price quoting kgb deals where I saw it listed. The receptionist was friendly and helpful. the room was a decent size and clean with a good bath and shower. it was January but the room was warm, the beds comfortable and plenty of hot water. the view from the room windows were lovely. We had an evening meal on the first night and enjoyed it so much that we immediately booked for the following evening - there is someone at this place that really knows how to cook - I mean REALLY cook. I had an apple crumble suffle with calvados soaked pear and prunes that was stunning, the suffle perfect!
We will be booking a murder mystery night with them soon as an excuse to go back. On the down side - if you could call it that - it is in the country, so you have to get in the car to go anywhere! you have to drive through this gorgeous countryside along roads the offer fantastically stunning views - well like I said its not perfect!

Room Tip: we had a room on the ground floor with a view over the valley, ask for that view.
