Disinterested staff and there are better Yum Char restaurants that keep up the pace. Food was well presented and tasted quite good.

It was my birthday and we wanted a Chinese restaurant preferably a buffet to try and satisfy all of our sons. We serendipitously found D House thinking it was a buffet. When we went in we noticed the tables had hot plates built in them...odd to these Canadian newcomers to New Zealand. The rest of the group in the restaurant were Chinese, generally a good sign in my books. The first waitress explained it was a hot pot in broken English. We thought we understood but missed a few key points as I stood up to go to the 'buffet' and a second waitress pointed out that we needed to order our soup first...it all made sense then. Each person orders the soup base of their choosing, I think that they had 9-12 types. Then you go to the buffet to get ingredients--noodles, veggies, meat, tofu, many other interesting items I won't pretend to know. Then you cook them in the soup base. You have tools forThere are also a few hot buffet items and salads as well.
We really enjoyed ourselves and if it were less expensive ($28/person) we would go regularly!

Only ordered the chicken noodles as takeaway. The waiting time was fast. Service was good. Food tasted just as I expected I would. No surprises.

We looked at D House in our local shops on a number of occasions and thought it would be interesting to try Yum Cha or hot pot meals some time. It looked very "chinese" and the style of eating looked different through the window. Feeling like a change one night, we went there on impulse and were very happy with what we found. It was Hot Pot night and it was soon apparent that it was a style of eating that was totally foreign to an "older kiwi couple". You pick your food raw from an endless buffet ranging from fish, through meat, to vegetables and fruit, along with a lot of "unknown" balls which turned out to be fish and meat, and flesh ranging from crab to steak. You also order a soup base, which is delivered to your table (generally shared with others). Each seat has its on hot plate and controls and you boil your soup in front of you and stew your meat and vegies in the soup. A choice of utensils is available from chop sticks to forks and spoons, but generally the locals seem to favour chop sticks, so we did our best! The food was yummy, we were clumsy and the shirt suffered slightly. But the experience was great and we will do it again. The staff were helpful, and despite some language difficulties the young lady who looked after us made us feel very welcome. She explained the intricacies of the cooking style, showed us around the food buffet and suggested food combinations that would go with the soup we chose. Price was very reasonable and although we probably did not eat as much as we could have, we went away very satisfied. An experience to be tried!

We visited this restaurant on a Sunday morning for Yum Cha, it was very quite but the staff very friendly, helpful and efficient. Food was very tasty and plentiful with a large pot of green tea.
They also have takeaway and a nightly buffet, I can recommend the yum Cha.
