“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2012

This was our first visit to this establishment and it certainly won't be the last. 6 of us sat down and were served by a very young and efficient staff. The surroundings were pleasant and comfortable and their was an air of old fashioned glory about the place which is not surprising considering it has been in existance since the mid 1600's. Our meal was delicious and the portions were more than ample. Thornhill is a bit out of the way but those visiting Aberfoyle or Callander can find it within easy reach.Excellent value for money.

We are a family of 2 adult and 2 kids! When here we and all enjoyed our meal, and were made to feel very welcome by staff that were very attentive, the kids meals were very good with home-made macaroni followed by ice cream at a very reasonable price, and the adult menu had a good choice of excellent home-made food of a good sized portion, and good value. We would definitely go again if ever in the area.

Spent a couple of days in Thornhill and had the pleasure of finding this welcoming hotel in the little village of Thornhill. The service was good and friendly and the food delicious. Because we were camping in the area and the weather not being particularly good (rain between the heavy showers!), having this oasis was very pleasing.

We had a pleasant evening meal at the Lion & Unicorn. Staff were very friendly and attentive. In our group of 8 we had 3 vegetarians and there was no real choice for them - the helpless young waitress suggested macaroni cheese .. not a dish you order on a Sunday night out. The meat dishes were fine and portions were a good size - slightly on the expensive side.

It was many years since I had last been here and arranged to meet friends visiting from abroad on the memories of my last visit.
I was disappointed,my caesar salad was made with round lettuce instead of romaine and the smoked chicken that accompanied it was average. Those who had the fish pie said it was tasty but our wait on a quiet lunchtime service was long,to say the least!
Our nice young waitress apologised for the wait and when she took our coffee order we thought she had gone to Brasil for the beans, and another apology, she had forgotten the order !

Ate hear a couple of times at the weekend the fish and chips are brilliant as was the steak pie, mussells and chicken liver pate!! very good, decent portions for main courses, good beer and a beer garden outside. We will def be back!

Only thing that could be improved was the starters smoked fish was pretty meagre for the price and the bread with the pate was very burnt tasting! Overall however really like the place and recommend you give it a go!

Room Tip: Did not stay just ate in the restaurant

We have eaten at the Lion and Unicorn on many occasions when we are visiting friends in the area and have never been disappointed with the food or service. Fiona is a very welcoming and attentive host and her staff helpful and friendly. My favourite starter is Haggis Wontons and main course try the Smoked Haddock fishcakes with creamy leek sauce - yum! Recommend everyone to eat here!
