Wonderful variety of butterflies and plants, a koi pond, even some flamingos - and button quail and parrots roaming free. Reasonable fee and nice gift shop.

“Spent 2-3 hours here”

How many places can you go where you're surrounded by so many beautiful butterflys. Watch for the birds too. Some of them are hard to spot. The little Button Quail are cute to watch too.

“Go during the morning!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

I went to the Butterfly gardens late in the day/early evening, when butterflys tend to sleep, so there was very little to really observe, as I heard from family who had been there during the day when thousands are flying about, so make sure to go early in the day- otherwise it was a bit of a bore really.

Hello Shawn K

Thank you for your review. I am disappointed to hear that you did not find your visit as enjoyable as you would have hoped. Your comment about the butterflies being more active in the morning is not necessarily true. In fact you will find that their flight is determined by light and heat. If they are not flying it just means you have to look for them in other places (on the trees, bushes, flowers, feeding trays, etc). Having said that, with 6000 butterflies there is always some flight activity.

Something else to keep in mind, on a day with lower light levels it is perfect for photography and to get a picture of the butterflies resting. One of the amazing aspects of our gardens is that the butterflies are just part of the show.We understand that many people would like that the butterflies fly everywhere all of the time but in nature this is not possible so that is one of the reasons we expanded our facility to include other inhabitants of the gardens.

One of the things that makes a visit to the Gardens special is one of our complimentary guided tours. On this tour you will see things you would not normally notice as you walk around the gardens on your own.

“waste of time and money”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2013

Used to be a fantastic place to go, several years ago. They had a fantastic and caring staff with reasonable admission fees. Our kids found lots of fun and inexpensive items in the gift shop to finish off the visit . Upon our last visit we found the gift shop catering more to cruise ship traffic rather than familiesas well as high admission costs, but not as fraudulent as The Butchart Gardens. Neither place was worth it. The Butchart Gardens has many different profit centers set up, certainly not like it used to be! The bright part of the day was having dinner at Sassy's Restaurant across the road followed by a visit to the Bleue Coyote pub just down the road! It was a bright and sunny day although I guess that the butterflies did not know itor there were not as many. Greed will eventually do our town in as everyone attempts to profit from what has gone on before.

Hello GrandpaJ939

I would like to start by thanking you for your review. I am truly disappointed and shocked by your review. I am disappointed because you did not find the improvements we have made over the last number of years to your liking and that our lower children and seniors pricing was still too high. We did lower the rates for children from $6.50 to $5.00 and seniors from $11.50 to $10. This was done 3 years ago and they have not increased since that time. Another way that we were able to save our customers money is by changing the complimentary admission to under 5 as opposed to under 3.

I am shocked that you did not notice all the added creatures in the gardens. We have tripled our butterfly population from 2000 to 6000 free flying tropical butterflies. We have flamingos, 30 different species of tropical birds free flying in the gardens, not to mention the 2 varieties of tortoises, turtles, poison dart frogs, geckos, chameleon, koi, goldfish and a saltwater fish display. Ninety percent of these creatures were added in the last 3 years and in that time we have still not raised our rates.

In our gift shop, we pride ourselves on having something for all ages and all budgets. We start with gifts for as little as 35 cents and range in price from there. As for catering to the cruise ships, you are correct we do cater to them and everyone else who comes through our doors.

As with all constructive criticism. I look forward to using it to make our attraction a better value. In that regard, I would like to invite you to contact me directly at info@butterflygardens.com.
