Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens, and National Historic Site of Canada, started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“Always Gorgeous”
Reviewed October 13, 2010

This was my third trip to the gardens, the first two times were Spring so I thought Fall might not be as colorful... I was so wrong! Every color imaginable was on full display and the place was immaculate as usual. This place is a little slice of paradise and serenity for the soul.

“Butchart Gardens is beautiful”
Reviewed October 12, 2010

My husband and I visited Butchart Gardens while in Victoria Island BC. We took a 2 hour bus tour because we didn't have a rental car on the island. The 2-hour timeframe was adequate to see all the gardens, but if you want to linger and enjoy the flowers, have tea or lunch or browse the souveneir shop, driving yourself is the best way to go, so you're not rushed. The gardens are amazingly beautiful, unlike any of we've seen before, well worth the visit. Don't forget your camera as your photos will be amazing.

“An unexpected pleasant experience”
Reviewed October 10, 2010

I have no real interest in gardening, but was convinced by wife and friends to stop there on our trip from the ferry into Victoria. It was a beautul September day and we had a pleasant afternoon tea.

In my opinion, the highlight is the sunken garden.

“A Visit You Must Make if You're Ever in Victoria!”
Reviewed October 9, 2010

Visiting The Butchart Gardens just outside of Victoria, BC is like taking a trip to horticultural heaven! Having visited several world-famous attractions over the course of many years, these gardens rank among the top sights to see anywhere. One can feel the love and care invested in the creation of this amazing place.

Be sure and bring a camera, comfortable shoes, and spending money for the lovely gift shop. We only had two hours to spend there and I felt it wasn't enough to really see the entire 50 acres and take a break too. Don't miss the famous Sunken Garden even if you only look out over it, as we did. Wheelchairs are available, but the paths would be difficult to navigate. Don't worry about bringing your own umbrella as ample supplies are provided, so don't let rain stop you from going there! You'll be too busy oohing and ahhing to notice it anyway!

“Still a must see, despite the expensive entrance fee and crowds”
Reviewed October 9, 2010

This is my 2nd visit to Butchart Gardens (visited 13 years ago), and my wife's first. It was on my wife's list of "must do" activites on Vancouver Island. Despite an October visit, we were treated to sunshine and clear blue skies. To our surprise most of the gardens were in bloom, though the roses were somewhat past peak. The gardens are impecably maintained and a treat for the eye. As others have posted, the downsides are a) the expensive entrance fee ($30+/- per peson) and the hordes of crowds. We were lucky to have a brief lull but it was obvious when a tour bus came in.

Regardless, if you are visiting Vancouver Island, Butchart Gardens remains on the "must see" list!
