Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

Beautiful gardens as you would expect. Very pleasant and helpful staff. There is a very nice loop you follow to see all of the grounds. Its takes about 2 hours to go around (depending on your personal pace / interests, etc). The sunken garden is very impressive.

I was surprised at the large number of annuals that they had, rather than more shrubs and perennials. A lot of the display beds looked like something you might see being put together with staples from your local garden centre.

We had supper in the blue popply café. The food was very good and the prices were not too bad.

As a tourist Butchart Gardens was always one of my favorite stops while visiting Victoria. Now as a local it has become my year round oasis. It offers beauty which changes with each season and no matter how often one visits there is always a new surprise to find. The garden is magnificent and always a source of delight. In the summer it bursts forth with color and endless variety. It is always fun to watch the reactions of first time visitors. I also love visiting during the festive season when the garden becomes the embodiment of "The Twelve Days of Christmas", and even offers skating to classical music. There is shopping in the gift shop and a lovely gallery filled with original art. Two casual dining areas offer up hot and cold beverages and light meals. The main dining room offers three different areas and a lovely veranda for relaxing and enjoying a lovely meal with friends or family. It is situated in the original home of the Butchart family and has an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. The food is delicious and there is even a vegetarian menu. The risotto with english peas is my favorite. In the summer it can be quite crowded with tourists but one just needs to remember that it is this crowd which keeps the garden blooming. If one wishes to avoid the crowds they need only wait to visit until dusk and see the garden in the evening when it offers up a whole new world of wonder. You must see it to believe it. Butchart garden is truly an oasis.
