Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens, and National Historic Site of Canada, started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“Scenic But Pricey”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

I will start this review by stating that I'm not a huge aficionado of gardens and such, but can appreciate their beauty. With that in mind, Butchart gardens definitely struck me as overpriced and touristy. It was utterly swarming with visitors, so it was hardly a calm, peaceful environment. It was around $30 for admission, and it just seemed excessive for what was there. No doubt the place requires a lot of maintenance and upkeep, but even my wife who is more of gardener than I was not blown away.

“Living On Its Reputation and Pricey”
Reviewed June 22, 2014

More than a century of effort has gone into creating a beautiful area with numerous plants presented in a variety of manners. It is intriguing, and perhaps for the enthusiast even fascinating. The support facilities are neat, the usual kitsch is available, and a decent restaurant is on site. The latter is useful because of the Garden's relative isolation. One nice aspect is that that seeds certified for import to the U.S. are available.

Sadly, other venues are more extensive and less superficial in presentation. In a sense it is a victim of its success because, while it may have led the way, it has now been overtaken by other gardens. Butchart also fails to adequately document virtually all the species in the garden, which is a real shame since the non-expert is left adrift. The cost is surprisingly high particularly given the isolation.

Even the two avid gardeners in our group came away feeling as the remainder of us did: this is a ticket-punching exercise that one must do if visiting Victoria, but is otherwise eminently miss-able because of its absence of documentation, price, and isolation.

“Magnificent”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

If you have any interest in Gardens these should be on your bucket list. They are an absolute credit to Jennie Butchart who created them to transform an old limestone quarry into something of beauty. AND they are! Could have spent the day there but time restraints meant we only had 3 hours. We took a bus trip out to the gardens from Downtown Victoria, approx 30 mins. It was mid May so the tulips were out and peony roses starting .... along with many other colourful blooms. The different garden areas are each very special and you can see a lot of hard work and Love has gone into these gardens!

“Pricey but worth it!”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

This garden cost 2 to 3 times more than any other garden I've been to but it was definitely worth the price. The gardens were spectacular. We spent several hours there and would have stayed longer if we had planned on staying on Vancouver Island for more than one day.
