Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

July is a good time to see the garden. A picture of colour especially the sunken garden. We spent 2 hours in the garden but was a little rushed as we were on a bus tour and had limited time. The perfect gardens extended into the restaurant which were decorated with growing orchids and begonias just to name a couple. Every part of the garden was immaculate.

I cannot adequately express how beautiful these gardens were. Masses and masses of flowers and trees. The sunken gardens, the Japanese garden, the Italian garden, the rose garden--all are spectacular. From our cruise ship we had only about 20 minutes of daylight to view the gardens. But the lighted areas were beautiful as well. I recommend at least two hours of daylight to see all there is to see.

These gardens are absolutely beautiful, and well worth visiting. However, I think it would be best to visit them early in the morning or late afternoon when the visitors have left. Sadly, the early afternoon crowds overwhelm the gardens, and spoil them for true garden lovers.

After you visit this place, you may never go "WOW" at another garden again. The Sunken Garden is the most amazing place. This started as a quarry and with the inspiration of Mrs. Butchart and the money of Mr. Butchart (who owned the cement factory and had plenty of labor available) and with assistance from various landscapers through the years, this place was transformed. GO EARLY!!! It opens at 10 and you should try to get there then. By noon, the place is really filling up. There are tours available with a ferry purchase, so you don't have to take your car if this is all you want to see in Victoria. That is not a bad option, because it will save you about a 30-minute car trip up to the Garden from Victoria.
