Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens, and National Historic Site of Canada, started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

“A delight for youth and adults”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2011

Butchart Gardens is worth a visit anytime of year. The adult admision is 28.00 CDS plus 12%tax. It also has paths that are accesable. The coffee shop and sit down venues serve excellent food and it appeared the gelato window was having great sucess. IT is worh the time and trip from Vancouver. We took a planned tour but you can take the Pacfic Coaches an walk on Ferry. I was told the one way on the Ferry is 48.00cds one way. Walk ons are 14.75 and senior are free Monday thru Thursday as walk ons.

“What a beautiful place!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2011

The gardens are unique and beautiful. We were there from noon until 9 pm and saw the gardens during the day and tastefully lighted at night. We had the afternoon tea and attended a free jazz concert (There is a different concert every evening during the summer months). We enjoyed every minute there.

The gardens are spectacular! If you are a flower person, plan to spend lots of time enjoying them, and be sure to bring a camera. We had high tea after our walk through the gardens. It was both fun and very British. The waiter was super; we enjoyed the experience! If you visit the gardens, high tea afterwards should be on your agenda.

“Gardens are spectacular, but skip the Tea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2011

Afternoon tea in the dining room was lovely to look at but the little sandwiches were more bread than filling, and the spreads needed seasonings. The lemon tart was wonderful however. My traveling companion ordered lunch off the menu and had a wonderful soup and salad of field greens. Our advice: spend less money for more quality by skipping tea and ordering from the menu.

“If love flowers and colors you'll love it here.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2011

I've been the Butchart gardens several times. Since I live in Arizona it's typically during the summer when we head north for a break from the heat. Every time I go they never cease to impress me. They have a massive selection of flowers and plants all perfectly arranged. They create an impressive natural canvas that the gardeners their are masters of manipulating. They have a rather large rose garden, the "sunken garden", an Italian and Japanese garden as well. Each living up to its theme.
Of them the sunken garden is the most impressive. With the italian garden being the least, but the gelato shop nearby makes up for that. It's hard to imagine it as a quarry until you see the history signs scattered about explaining how the garden got started and random fun facts.
The entire estate is kept near immaculate given the volume of people they deal with in a day. There's a sit down restaurant that is very hard to get into for tea, lunch, or dinner and a cafe style restaurant as well. Both are very good, although personally the cafe restaraunt is better.
If you are truly a hardcore gardener or botanist they have experts available to answer any questions you might have. Or you could just pick up the seeds of the plants you've just seen.
A fun day for sure, although it does cater to those who will be able to appreciate the beauty, so small kids might get easily bored if they aren't extremely into flowers or photography (you could probably make a career out of taking pictures of the various flowers there honestly). It does have a slightly high day pass price in comparision to say a botanical garden (which is similiar), but it's worth it. Especially on a firework day!
