Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.
Useful Information: Activities for young children, Food available for purchase, Bathroom facilities, Lockers / storage, Wheelchair access

great spot for a visit. The sunken garden is the best. Roses were magnificent. Japanese garden only fair.

We had not been to Butchart for some time and we weren't disappointed. Spring was late to the area making the usual plantings four weeks later than usual. However, the Garden was it's usual gorgeous entity. We also enjoyed the evening entertainment that is provided during the Summer. We took advantage of their offer to return the next day for only $3.50 to enjoy the Garden at a different time of the day with the differing lighting. The evening lighting does offer a different prospective. Our only regret is that we missed the Saturday evening fireworks.

If you are in the least bit interest in flowers or gardens this is the ultimate attraction. What is fun is that you could continually visit at different times of the year and it will always look different depending on what is blooming at the time. I took a gazillion pictures!!

Take time to have lunch at the nicer restaurant. it is very affordable. We ate on the porch overlooking the rose garden and the Italian garden. I could smell the aroma of the roses in the air. What a delightful day!!!!

I had some spare time while in Victoria and thought I'd go and see what all the fuss was about at Butchart Gardens. The place is manicured to a T. It didn't appear that a blade of grass or a single leaf was out of place making it seem very artificial. Not only that - it was really, really crowded. Many tour buses and hordes of people everywhere. Given that I'm a backwoods hiker I should have stayed clear of the place in the first place. If you like postcard-perfect flowers and shrubbery and water features and oodles of tourists snapping pictures then this is the place for you.

Due to geography, tour buses arrive from Vancouver close to 11 am. It is for this reason we suggest (on our web site) if you can pick your time to visit, to come either before 10:30 am or in the mid-afternoon. This advice is primarily for the peak months of July and August.
