“Small campsites but GREAT location to beach”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2010

Stayed two nights in campground, booked 3mths in advance to have choice (private and quiet) campsite. Found out that wasn't really possible since all the campsites were very close together. Main benefit is the proximity to the beach, just a short 5min walk away. One suggestion is to provide soap by the sinks. Overall it was fine for our short stay.

We have stayed at Tribune Bay Campsite every year for the last 13 years. We love the location, close to the beautiful beaches of Hornby. However, the campsite has gone down-hill in the last few years. We can no longer ignore the fact that the showers are dirty and don't work properly, that the wash-house was locked (due to a problem with the key!), that the out-houses were full and smelly, that there was no drinking water for sale, and that the place was full of rowdies. Each campsite was full of drunks. It seems to me that the management needs to take back the reins and clean, upgrade and Manage! I don't know how I will break it to my kids that I don't want to go back!

I have stayed at Tribune Bay Campground many times in the past. Although it wasn't noted for having the cleanest washrooms (use the ones at the CO-OP) it was well run and if you weren't respectful of others, you were asked to leave. The new owners are ruining a beautiful spot. I even tried to reserve a spot last week and was told if you show up to camp, you need a $300 deposit!! Ford's Cove is the place to stay

As the other reviewers have noted this camground is not well run, dirty, neglected and full of loud partying lager louts and lots and lots of children and dogs.

We had two different experiences at this campground. The first two nights we stayed in sites 64 and 65 with several families from our son's grade school class. When all the tents are set up, these two sites are like a cocoon in the middle of the campground. It's close to a small grassy area where we had a soccer game (along with the mandatory stoned and drunk neighbour who insisted in joining in). We had a nice family oriented time despite the drunks wandering about.

The last night we moved a short distance away, to site 101. What a difference. Partying all day and all night. Thought I was in a completely different campground. At 10 pm one of the staff came by to ask people to be quiet. They verbally abused the guy. The partying continued well past 2 am and began again at 6 am with a volleyball match in front of our camper.

The Coop store is right beside the campground and has well maintained, very clean portable toilets in their new parking lot. There is a pedestrian gate between the campground and the Coop.

In contrast to most campgrounds on Vancouver Island, this place needs a serious make over. Brad's Dads Land gets our business next time.

As an aside, the beach is beautiful and would be a great place to go to at the beginning and end of the summer season. As I was walking along it, I thought of how similar it was to a nice small bay in Thailand. Warm water (first 20 feet in anyways), white sand, folks enjoying the beach and the weather. Then a guy walking towards me dropped his gear and urinated right in front of me to the joy of his girlfriend. Nice. Hornby in the summer not for me.

  • Liked — Proximity to Tribune Bay
  • Disliked — Lack of cleanliness, lack of management and loud, drunk lager louts.

Hi,

We stayed there for three days. The showers and washrooms weren't terribly clean. The place is noisey and full of children.

The staff tried to be polite but I think were tired of dealing with the type of public that stays at a campground on weekends. The staff did get visibly and audibly agitated when dealing with regular clients. Morale and lack of training could be an issue.

It is close to the Coop and the beach.

I wouldn't stay there again.

We are experienced tenting and VW Westfalia campers, are not overly fussy and are very used to staying in unserviced Forestry Sites with only pit latrines and no more. As we were in need of a shower after over a week in such sites and going to Hornby Island, Tribune Bay Campsite was recommended to us as there would be showers, and a laundry. Not only that Tribune Bay is so beautiful and the campsite was right there. We arrived to find the large camping ground not very well tended, and it immediately became clear that this was party central. We decided to pick a not very well defined site, nonetheless, far away from the groups of young men and women drinking in the early afternoon, and tour the area. You could smell the loos and the dirty mildew'y shower block quite far away and upon further inspection, we basically decided we could go one more night without a shower and left. Fortunately, we had not booked in and had therefore not paid any money. If you want party central, a dirty, badly managed campsite, and NO view of the beach, then Tribune Bay Campsite is your place. But if you want a quiet, extremely clean place for you and your family, we highly recommend BradsDadsLand campsite. It has lovely well-kept sites, excellent showers and laundry and Adirondack chairs overlooking the water for you to enjoy a wonderful peaceful stay. It is the antithesis of Tribune Bay Campsite so if you are put off by the first words in their ads - "no Music" you now know why.

Enjoy Hornby Island!

Tribune Bay Campground: OK, we had heard fantastic things about this campground, but alas, that was under old management, which was in place for over 30 years, and yes, beware the new management, they dont know the first thing about running a campground, we had such a difficult time booking it in the first place, then when we got there we found the sites they had assigned us were in a very open area close to party central, where young adults hooted and hollered and played music until after midnight, and we had small children with us. Next, when we asked for different sites, they said everything was booked, but the sites we asked to change to stayed vacant during the nights we stayed there so I dont know who had booked them, also we went to get firewood early in the morning, about 8 AM and the fellow who works there was standing around eating an apple and said to come back around 10AM, he was too lazy too open the lock and hand us a bundle of wood, also there is no control or enforcement of the campground, loud partying all night and one morning we woke up to find the volleyball net had been vandalized. We felt a little nervous here. On the plus side, the campground was walking distance to the Trinune bay beach which was beautiful and close to the coop grocery store and funky restaurants if you needed supplies.
