Hilary makes some of their own cheese - try the "Red Dawn", if it's available. Lunch is a bit pricey but the food is fresh. The sandwiches are made with the bread from the bakery next door. You can't get fresher than that!

We called into Cowichan on our Vancouver Island holiday and it is a very interesting, pretty little place full of character. We needed a coffee and spotted Hilary's amongst the cafe. I had seen Hilary at a food market in Victorie and read about her in one of the tourist magazines and her hand made cheese so we had to go in! There is a veranda with tables and you then enter the shop with the cafe at the back overlooking the water. You can see from the photos how gorgous it is and look at my lovely soup. Good coffee as well. The bread is bought at the handmade bread shop just a few doors away. We would have bought cheese but had a hot journey ahead of us and it would have spoilt in the car. Try it, cheese, lunch, you won't be disappointed.

We happened upon Patty, the owner, and her sweet dog along a path in Goldstream National Park while looking for salmon swimming upstream. We had a nice, brief conversation and she was kind enough to invite us to her cafe in Cowichan Bay. We made the short trek up to the bay from Victoria the next day and enjoyed a delicious soup & sandwich lunch overlooking the marina & bay. We even caught a glimpse of a sea lion swimming under a pier! Hubby had the beef & blue sandwich, I had the turkey & havarti and we shared the chicken cabbage soup. Everything was delicious! Then we, of course, had to purchase some of the homemade cheese for tasting later! Thank you, Patty, for the lunch! That was so nice of you!
