“A unique waterfront place - must see!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2011

We (family of four, with two daughters aged 10 and 12) spend a memorable week in July 2008 at the desolation resort. We stayed at Chalet 6 - a two story a-frame structure with a hot tub, situated high above the Okeover inlet of BC's desolation sound.

The place is clean and cozy, the kids loved the upstairs bedroom. Bathrooms are very small and dark. You have to go to Lund to get supplies in the general story (the ony story), or go to the Laughing Oyster restaurant around the corner, which is pretty good and has an amazing view.

We spent the day kayaking, swimming, boating, sunbathing or exploring Lund. Once the sun settles, the hot tub provided warmth, and the barbeque was fired up.

In summary - a unique place - if you like the outdoors, you'll love it!

We were two families with 5 children, mainly teenagers. The resort was in the most exquisitely beautiful place, nestled in between trees, with stunning views over the sound. We shared out cabins 8.1/8/2 and 4.2 between the 9 of us. 8.1/8.2 definitely has the best situation, right by the water, but is one of the older ones so lacks a dishwasher etc. Nevertheless it was all very comfortable and clean though not luxurious, with BBQ and tables and chairs outside reasonably stocked kitchen inside, kayaks and canoes on tap, picture perfect village of Lund 10 minute away for groceries and goodies, an excellent restaurant 5 minutes walking away (astonishing, considering how remote it all feels), friendly and helpful hosts. Fantastic for older kids, they were certainly never bored between water sports, fishing and kicking a ball around, their cabin had a dvd player and reception had dvds to loan out as well. We had brought bikes which was useful for whizzing between cabins, but the road out to Lund is reasonably steep so not the easiest cycle ride. Highlights were swimming on a deserted beach and watching the summer meteor showers. Fabulous!

This resort is very peaceful, with beautiful scenery and great cabins with full kitchens and a barbeque. Look out for oysters when you launch one of the resort's kayaks and the owner's flying boat (a microlight). A place to visit if you want peace & quiet.

Friends here in England had recommended this resort when they visited in 2007, so we took their advice in July this year. Minimum stays in high season are for three days but if short of time,as we were, it's worth asking if they will take reservations for one or two days, though on a one day stay you won't appreciate the peace of this place. The chalets are charming and well-appointed - we were on the ground floor of a two-level one (see photo and the other photos are the views from it) and reviewers are right when they say you are well aware of people living above but, hey, they are made of wood after all. Cars can deliver luggage but then have to stay in parking areas, but only 3 minutes walk away. Canoes & kayaks are free - and there are plenty of them. The hosts are charming and welcoming too - when we stayed there was a storm and a power-cut over a wide area, and the owner's wife visited each chalet on foot during a downpour to tell us when power would be restored. Will definitely recommend this to friends visiting BC as a haven of peace and quiet, and well worth the 5-6 hour drive from Vancouver (which includes 2 ferries).

Friendly, private, beautiful location, excellent chalets with full kitchens. We were steered to Desolation Resort by a restaurant owner in Lund. We originally intended to stay for 2 nights and extended to 5 because we enjoyed it so much.

Little if any noise, free use of kayaks or canoes on the Okeover Arm in the Desolation Sound area, and custom built units with spectacular views. Some are singles, some are duplex and some have an upper and lower unit. Some sleep 2 and others up to 8. Some are child friendly and/or pet friendly. The owners are friendly, available and yet not intrusive. Laundry facilities either in the unit or upon request. Wireless internet at the office and it often works in some of the units as well. The price is extremely fair for what you get.

Our unit had been rented out for 12 years and yet looked as if it was just a year or two old. Excellent condition and very attractive.

You can also use your own canoe or kayak and dockage is available for a fee. While we were here the waters were pretty calm and the tides, although about 8-10 feet, had little current to deal with. Suitable for beginners under the conditions we had.

There is a small store in Lund for supplies - just a couple of miles away - and a Safeway, etc. in Powell River, about 17 miles away. Also, an excellent restaurant just around the corner - the Laughing Oyster.

Only potential negative is that if you are in a lower unit and the upper is occupied, it could be noisy. We were fortunate, but when someone previewed the unit above us, the noise was a bit much.

We travel over 100 days a year and rarely return to the same place, but are extremely likely to make an exception for Desolation Resort.

Excellent place to stay on the Sunshine Coast. Each cabin (we stayed in two different cabins) is a handmade cedar treasure. Comfortable and cozy with all the necessary amenities for an extended stay. Great access via Okeover Inlet out to Desolation Sound. Canoes and kayaks are provided. Rental boats are close by. Will stay there again!
