“Picturesque Village by the Lake”
Review of Waterton Village

We drove around the two main streets of Waterton Village and thought that it looked like a cute little town with its galleries, gift shops and eateries. Bought some expensive take away coffee and was handed Canadian dollars in the change. Fortunately I was able to change to a credit card purchase as we were heading straight back to USA and were only in Canada for four hours. We had a lovely picnic by the lake and saw the cruise boat passing by loaded with tourists enjoying the beautiful scenery and sunshine. Be sure to call in and see this pretty little town.

Waterton has changed very little since my first visit in 1977 -- but that's a good thing! It's a tiny, manageable village in the most outstandingly beautiful surroundings. There are lots of good cafes and restaurants, gift shops to mooch around in, and the whole place is so small that you can explore it on foot easily. For a slightly speedier option, you can rent bikes from "Pats" -- we went for the buggy-style "Surry" bicycles which are pedalled by two adults with room for a child or two in the front basket. There is very little traffic in the townsite and the speed limit is very low so cycling is safe even for quite young children. Waterton doesn't have glitzy nightlife or fancy restaurants, but it is the perfect place to spend a few days having an old fashioned family holiday. It's safe, it's pretty, it's low-key and relaxed.
You don't need to venture too far to see willdlife either: mule deer congregate on any available patch of grass in the town (so many of them that the town has hired a lady to scare them away!)... you'll also see Rocky Mountain Sheep and various smaller creatures as you stroll around the town after lunch.

We ate the majority of our meals in the village as the prices were much more reasonable than P.O.W. hotel. Strolling through the village surrounded by mountains and great sunsets was really amazing.

We visited Waterton Village during a roadtrip June 2013, and found it to be a delightful small town on the shores of beautiful Waterton Lake. The shops are fun and the prices surprisingly reasonable. The highlight though, was a little gourmet hotdog shop called "Weiners of Waterton". Oh my gosh, the dogs were delicious and the sweet potato fries the best we ever ate! Don't miss this treat if you're traveling to Waterton Village.
