“So beautiful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2012

This is an older hotel, so yes it creaks. But, that is part of the appeal! The weather was perfect when we got there, so we were able to hike, enjoy the properties, and see lots of wildlife. Our room was tiny, but just fine for two people. We had a lakeview room so that was priceless. I highly recommend getting a room on that side of the hotel. Everything in the room was very nice. We walked out on the balcony of our room....breathtaking view! The bed slept fine and was very comfortable. I do have to mention that at 4am the wind *really* picked up and we could feel the hotel swaying. That was interesting!

The staff was incredible. Everyone treated us SO nice and really made us feel like we were there only customers. The bell staff was the best! The first night our bellman took our luggage to the room, took time to explain Waterton, pointed out mountains by their "names", etc. Wow! Thanks to him!

We went into Waterton and had bbq, which was very good for lunch. We went to Waterton Pizzeria late night and the pizza and service was excellent.

This was the first night of our 25th wedding anniversary trip. The staff knew this and made a point to congratulate us. Thank you! That meant alot!

I highly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the lake! You won't regret it!

Growing up in Western Montana, trips to Glacier National Park were a regular occurrence and sometimes there would be an afternoon jaunt to Waterton, with a stop at the Prince of Wales Hotel to marvel at the view from the lobby. With its pointy green gabled roof and timbered facade, the hotel looks like it was plucked out of some Alpine fairy tail and dropped in the only earthly location worthy of its mystique. I vowed as a kid that someday I was going to stay there. I finally got my chance; it was worth the wait.

Progress is inevitable, preservation is not. When you’re staying at the Prince of Wales, it’s not about fancy plush towels or trivial little amenities like fancy soaps and shoe shine cloths. It’s about the little wood-framed medicine cabinet with its brass hardware that boasts a patina that only age can create. Just the act of opening it makes you feel like you’re going back in time. When you check in, you’re handed a real room key, not a little plastic card. You can lay in your bed and marvel at the enormous timbered beams that comprise the entire structure of the building and aren’t just faux wood finishes over steel beams. Staying at this historic property helps to do just that -- keep it historic. And then of course there’s the view, which after all, is priceless.

The eager young Canadian staff was so friendly and hospitable. We were there opening weekend so some of the staff was still trying to get acclimated, but I appreciated the fact that if a staff member didn’t know something, they didn’t try to bluff their way through it; they just said they didn’t know and then would go find out. We were super pleased with the service.

A few tips I might offer to fellow travelers: got long johns? Pack ‘em. Hopefully you don’t need them but if you do, you’ll be happy you have them. I once woke up to 6” of snow in Glacier, in August. I’ve read a couple reviews about people complaining about it being too hot at the Prince of Wales. If that’s the case, don't complain. Count your blessings.

The afternoon tea is a bargain at $30. (Yes, seriously.) Afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria is $60. Tea at the Savoy Hotel in London is $70. Afternoon “tea” is a bit of a misnomer. Sure, you get a couple cups of tea, but it’s all about the food. It’s a 3-tiered dessert buffet that you don’t need to leave your chair for. And a stunning view. Take your time. Enjoy it.

Room Tip: The lake view is really the appeal of the hotel. Although there is an advantage of the mountain side...

I can't disagree with most of the reviews. The rooms can be small, some of them are walkup, the towels, sheets, soap etc are not the best. The price is higher than expected for the lack of amenities however there is something about this hotel you cannot get anywhere else. The views are world class (yes it can be windy, wear a windbreaker), the feel of history is throughout the hotel down to the tiny elevator that still needs an operator. We booked for one night and ended up staying two. It a great location to visit the park, the staff was great (mostly young college students as the hotel is only open for the summer season) and the place is funky and interesting. There is a timeless feeling to the landscape and when staying at the hotel you can't help but think about the fact this hotel was built in the middle of nowhere ( and was probably luxurious at the time). The view from the restaurant, lobby and bar are very nice if you can't stay overnight. The sky at night outside the hotel is amazing and waking up with view of the lake is amazing. Would we stay here again? Yes.

Room Tip: Absolutely get a view of the lake

We stayed here with our six year old daughter last summer. I read all the reviews about this being a tired, creaky old place. Frankly, that was part of the appeal. This has a time-worn feel, no doubt, but also a lot of charm you cannot get in new hotel. If you like places with character, bars and restaurants with views to die for, then you probably will like this place!

We decided to do it up and got a room with a balcony facing the water. It was well worth it! The views are still among the best I've ever had on a holiday, and I've traveled quite a bit.

There's a lot to do in this town, especially if you like nature.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the lake.

I feel I have to comment on this place b/c so many people have issue with the cost of the room and the lack of modern amenities. If you want an Intercontinental hotel that is fresh and perfect and has no character then stay there. Otherwise enjoy something different. This place has class, history and charm. The staff here is excellent as well.
We had a lovely 2 night stay. We walked into Waterton atleast once per day. Our room was on the 4th floor, lakeview. Really, this is all I need to say. The view is amazing. We could lay in bed and soak in this view for hours.
Yes it's windy. Can't change that. Nice place for a couple of days, then move on.

The high rating is not for the comfort and ammenities; it is rather for the historical value and the breathtaking vista from the hotel. We were located on one of the top floors, with a view on the lake - a breathtaking experience. The hotel is all wooden - so when the eind blows, and it blows very often, the hotel feels creepy. The floors are squeeking, the corridors are tiny, the rooms are small, but it is an experience you will not regret nor forget. Very "English", the hotel ofers tea time, has bellboys dressed in "English" attire and offers good breakfast. I would not stay there for one week, but a stay for up to three days will allow you to relax and soak in the wonderful views the park has to offer.

Thank you for taking your time to leave this feedback. Yes, the wind can be a bit stronger than our guests often expect. The hotel has stood the test of time, however, and you can be rest assured, it will continue as it is for years to come. We hope to see you again, on your next visit to Waterton.

We traveled into Canada and stayed at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Sept 2011. The setting was beautiful especially at sunset. We hiked a trail that took us up 600 ft so we had a spectacular view of the hotel and the area. There was a lovely English style tea luncheon. There are nice shops in Waterton for coffee and gifts. Our experience at the hotel dining room was only fair-the service was poor and the food was just average. Maybe, since it was soon to be the end of the season, there is an excuse.
Overall we enjoyed the trip.

Room Tip: Facing the lake is best!

No excuses here! I am so sorry to hear that our service was sub-par. Our management sets a higher example for our employees, and I want you to know that your comment has been passed on to our company president in an effort to continually improve our service. We take it as a great compliment that you still awarded us 4 of 5 rating points even with only fair service. Thank you.
