“Bring Your Earlpugs”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2008

We were staying at another lodge in Waterton for the first two nights, and on our final night we stayed at the Crandell Mountain Lodge.

The lodge is conveniently located in town and the best restaurant (the Kilmorey) is directly across the street. Check-in was a breeze and we got a room on the first floor. The room was clean, and there was a small kitchenette and a TV (no cable). The bathroom had a toilet, sink and shower stall with a small window. The bed was comfortable, and it was quiet at night. If you feel like watching TV, you might want to skip it. There's not much to choose from, and face it, that's not why people travel to Waterton anyway. We didn't use the kitchenette. There is parking outside, but we actually had to search a bit to find the one remaining spot.

We heard from a guide on one of our trail rides that the water in the bathrooms was a little sketchy. Apparently there's some iron in it, so there is a bit of an odor. It didn't bother me, but my girlfriend picked up on it. I don't think it's a threat to anyone's health.

Be ready for an early wake up call. The walls and ceiling are thinly insulated, so any noise your upstairs neighbor makes you will hear. Right down to the springs in the mattress. We weren't trying to sleep in, but there was no way that you can slumber after 7:00 AM or so, simply because of all the banging and noise. That aside, it's certainly a functional place to rest your head for a night or two.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2008

We stayed here for three nights in July 2008 and found it a rather uninspiring place to stay in. The first heck in girl was friendly enough and even offered to help us with our luggage so that was a good start, but overall the lodge was not impressive. Whilst the room was reasonably comfortable, the bathroom was very average. There is almost nothing in our room in the way of storage for our clothes and possessions and less in the bathroom. I could not get a hot shower on any morning and the toilet did not flush properly. They fiixed the toilet but not the problem with the shower. I was very reluctantly given a room discount from a most surly check out girl when I complained on checkout. INo apology, no nothing. I was also astounded that they refused to let me pay by bill by Canadian traveller's cheques and insisted it come off my credit card. Nowhere else refused to take TC's - why should this place? There were no promised cookies available until the morning of our last day - what a shame as I hear they were lovely. The hotel has nothing in the way of facilities - there are no breakfast facilities, the laundry is offsite and very expensive, there are no internet facilities, and no in room phone. Whilst I knew this before I left, I did not realise how frustrating this would be. However, there is plenty of facilities in town. Zum's cafe in town do an excellent breakfast and lunch with a very extensive menu and the staff are very friendly. There are also three internet computers there for a small fee ($2 bought nearly 15 mins). There is a great restaurant in town on the waterfront - sorry can't remember the name - but the food was excellent as was the service. We went to Kilmorney lodge for afternoon tea one day and were so put off by the rudeness and inattention of the staff we said we would not eat there again. We also ate at the Prince of Wales Hotel on the hill - looks great, but then looks can be, and were deceiving, A long wait for our very average food and I actually had to send mine back as it was undercooked. No discount on the bill either. Very poor. Waterton is a lovely town however and the boat trip to Goat Haunt is well worth it. But probably best to find somewhere else to stay.

  • Liked — convenient location, comfortable beds
  • Disliked — limited facilities, poor storage space in rooms, unfriendly check out staff, poor quality bathroom

We recently spent three nights (mid June) at the lodge and would warn you off if you are looking for clean rooms, quiet rooms, rooms with a view, rooms that are reasonably priced.
There are no amenties.
We did find the staff friendly.
It is the kind of place that you reluctantly stay at for the sleep that you need but you do not want to spend any time in the room inself.

We just returned from a trip to Waterton-Glacier National Park. Our one night stay at Crandell Mountain Lodge was great! The room was clean, nicely decorated, and reminded us of a bed and breakfast. We were impressed that the girl that checked us in also took us to our room. It was a nice touch! We had a room with a gas fireplace, and since it was snowing while we were there, we took advantage of it! We were pleased with the lodge and would definitely stay there, again. We went across the street at Kilmorey Lodge for a delicious breakfast, too.

The Crandell Mountain Lodge was perfect for us. We booked a room with a (tiny!) kitchenette, a double bed and a single bed. Very cozy atmosphere, with wood decor and a nice fireplace. The hotel is within walking distance to the village stores.

We stayed at Crandell Lodge in the middle of September.
We were greeted by April, who was very helpful and friendly, and showed us to our room, the 'Bears Den Suite'.

The room was fab! If you love bears, you have to stay here!! I counted, and there are well over 30 bears in the room (ornaments, pictures, cuddly toys, etc) and even a bear holding the toilet roll in the bathroom! Everything was very clean and well looked after, the spa bath (in-room) worked well, the room was a good size, and the bed was very comfortable.

As mentioned in previous reviews, home-made cookies are available mid-afternoon onwards, and they were great - especially when we got them freshly baked and still soft in the middle! All the little touches like this make a difference, and we were glad to be staying here.

Location is good - not too close to the busier part of town to cause any noise, but close enough so that we could walk to all the restaurants and shops. It's also a stone's throw from the pretty lake with a view of the Prince of Wales hotel.

Out of everywhere in Waterton, I'm glad we stayed here - it seemed much more characterful than the other hotels.

Make sure you take a trip to red rock canyon - we saw 11 bears on our trip!

  • Liked — The bears in the room, the cookies, the helpful staff
  • Disliked — nothing really!

This lodge is situated at the junction of the main entrance road to Waterton town site. This worried us a bit at check in concerning road noise but actually the location is very quiet with little traffic after 7.00pm and it didn't bother us at all.

The lodge is actually a motel. There are no meals provided but this isn't a major problem as there are plently of options in town.

We were booked in the Bears Den. We were disconcerted on being shown the room by the strong smell of soot from the fireplace and the ceiling fan not working (there was a replacement floor standing one and it was mended in 24 hours). Fortunately this dispersed over the next few hours by letting some air in.

The room is situated around the corner from the main run of rooms with its own parking space. Frankly we thought the bear concept rather tacky - I don't need soft toys. bear models, bear pictures and fairy lights on artificial trees everywhere (and I mean everywhere).

The room was a good size and clean. The standard of housekeeping was very good. It was let down by very dated decor with a feeling of something that had not been redecorated for 10 to 15 years.

Small bathroom with bath and shower over (lots of hot water and good pressure), toilet and basin. Plenty of towels. Oddly there is also a rather large jacuzzi tub in the bedroom which we didn't use.

The room also has a microwave and fridge.

Other reviewers have recommended the restaurant in the Kilmorey lodge for breakfast and dinner. It is certainly convenient being just over the road. We only ate breakfast there but found the atmosphere a bit oppressive. We found Zumms (10 minute walk) to be a much better choice.
