Three of us stayed two nights at the Orange Tabby in Port Hardy on Vancouver Island before boarding a liveaboard boat to scuba dive the area. James was our host, as his wife was out of town. My husband and I stayed in a larger room with private bath, queen bed, and plenty of storage; our friend was just across the hall in a slightly smaller room with private bath. We were the only three there as it was a bit out of season, so we just left our doors open much of the time. We were about a two minute walk from town, one minute from the Sporty Bar & Grill, which had fantastic soup and fish dinners, and a few minutes from the Supreme Convenience Store where we had wonderful ice cream.
James cooks a mean breakfast: porridge, pumpkin/walnut bread, melon, yogurt, and zucchini quiche the first morning, and porridge, poached egg & fried tomato on an English muffin, scones, yogurt, watermelon, and smoked salmon the second morning.
Each room had a cute little electric fireplace, but only one could be operated at a time, or a circuit blew. There's a pet cat and a dog who aren't supposed to be downstairs, but sometimes sneaked down for some company. James was working on a kitchen/dining area downstairs where the bedrooms are, so small groups can do their own cooking, and James can serve breakfast downstairs instead of upstairs where he and Susan live. He's also planning on putting a door at the bottom of the steps for more privacy and to keep the animals upstairs.
Port Hardy is a great place for exploring and hiking, and the Orange Tabby B&B was the perfect place for us to stay.
