“Fabulous cottage!”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

I have been going to Nicky's Old Vicarage, in Wetton, for the past few Septembers. This year I decided to stay in the cottage attached to the Vicarage.
I was not disappointed - Nicky has provided an absolutely delightful cottage - the standard of which is, quite simply, superb. The cottage has everything you would require whatever the weather! Nicky has fabulous taste and the décor is pristine, modern and yet very homely. I would totally recommend that you try either Nicky's B&B (her cooked breakfasts are a treat!) or this beautiful cottage. I'll be going back.....and maybe before next September!! Thanks Nicky for a truly fabulous holiday.

Room Tip: Just book it !

As Nicky invited me in from the deluge outside, the kettle had been put on, Maisie (the collie dog) grabbed her favourite toy - to be thrown and the home from home feeling came back again.

The Old Vicarage, is precisely what it was. Nicky has taken the building forward, refining and developing this Victorian Manse, into a very comfortable B & B, with comforts that many others fail to attain.

Perfect for walks on all occasions, but the unusual wind and rain was producing waterproof reliability problems today. So strong was the wind, that local trees had been brought down - one in Nicky's garden narrowly missing her well loved greenhouse.

Looking more like a drowned rat, off with the shoes and socks, and a quick visit to a hot shower!

Nicky IS the perfect host. The rooms are large and spacious. Three are ensuite and the fourth gains by having an enormous bathroom 'next door'.

Tea and homemade cake was then consumed. On hot summery days, this can be taken in on the extensive lawn and beautiful garden. A wonderful chill out for any weekend starts now!

Breakfast is always a wonderful occasion. Always fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, homemade jam on home made bread (sunflower today), freshly cooked English healthy breakfast. Great coffee, also good banter with other guests around the large country farm styled table and mine host.

You never feel rushed, time stops still, you can hear the birds sing, play with the dog (she never tires), and feel totally de-stressed by the end of any visit.

Nicky also has the Little Vicarage available - which is a self contained four bed apartment, which I have seen from the grass roots up. It is also perfect, if you are a family of four, wanting accommodation for an extended break.

Go on, spoil yourself .... A wonderful part of the country - and Nicky can always give advice on where to go, see, eat, visit, walk, cycle ...... and find the perfect cheese!

Room Tip: Want the best room ..... it may have already been occupied. Any room is excellent.

This Victorian vicarage B&B is set in spacious grounds yet in the centre of the picturesque village of Wetton. Rooms are spacious with comfortable beds, period furniture and modern en-suites. Whilst peaceful outside you may hear early risers in the morning due to the wooden floors and creaky staircase, but these are part of the charm. The grounds are lovely and provide great views from all rooms.

You are greeted by on arrival by Nicky the host, who promptly offers drinks and freshly baked cakes. Nicky also has a well-planned approach to the excellent breakfasts, asking you to order and select a time the previous evening. The system worked well and breakfast arrived on the table promptly. I said table as guests share a communal table. Whilst we are happy with this arrangement and have struck up some good conversations in the past, unfortunately we had the show-off couple for our two nights. They got worse on the second morning and there was no escape. Sometimes you are just unlucky.

The Old Vicarage is ideally situated for walking from the door and within a short drive are many excellent places to visit.

My only negative, and is the reason for not giving 5 stars, is the reference on the Old Vicarage website to the lovely village pub at the end of the drive. It was in part the reason for staying, allowing us to leave the car and have a drink with dinner. Unfortunately on arrival Nicky warned us off the pub as it was not very good. Having already booked a table we thought we would give it a try. The food has a heavy bias toward fried food, the décor was jaded, patio area not swept for a long time and it generally looked unloved. You therefore have the choice of getting a taxi from Ashbourne or driving to another village for a meal.

Stayed for 3 nights as part of a visit for a wedding held on a nearby farm. Arrived to a warm welcome from Nicky and were very happy with the quality of the room. As with any b&b the experience is largely dependent upon the owner. We found Nicky to be a great host, friendly but provided us with our own space when we wanted. Breakfast was excellent and had a wide variety. The location makes an excellent base for exploring the peaks. Would definitely recommend and look forward to staying again.

Just to say, we stayed 26th july for 3 nights and had a great time, Nicky is the perfect host, full of local knowledge and so hospitable, the house was beautiful as was our room and our adjoining bathroom .the rest are en suite. Perfect location for our walks and cycling we did while we were there. There is a pub at the end of the drive ( although we found one of the staff a little blunt to say the least) the food was good though. We will definitely be back if she has us ( my wife stained the towel with her new hair colour, sorry nicky x) But Nicky laughed it off. Thanks Nicky you and your house are well worth a visit and stay.
