“Not a comfortable welcoming atmosphere.”
Reviewed March 8, 2011

This hotel is in a good situation for visiting Monteverde and at first glance appears to be attractive. However our room was small and dark, overcrowded with furniture, and had a damp musty feel. The bathroom was even smaller. The balcony outside had just four chairs for three rooms a nd the reception area had seating for six. Contrary to info there was no complimentary internet and a request to use it was met with a negative shrug. Also hair driers were unavailable. The food in the retaurant is of good quality but the service leaves a lot to be desired. These necessity to make these comments is sad because the hotel has a lot of potential.

This was a Swiss style cabin built from wood, simple yet gorgeous.

The breakfast was amazing and so huge. Fresh fruit, amazing eggs, homemade granola and homemade jam - just spectacular!

No luxury but a great value. Clean rooms, very friendly staff and really good food. It's in a quiet location but easy to get to.

Yes, De Lucia has some drawbacks as have been written here. Walls are paper thin (we were lucky and I think we were alone there for both nights), the rooms are small and a bit musty, nothing to write home about. However, the point of being in this town is to be outside doing things, so we really spent minimal time in the room and passed out upon coming home. Good things: cheaper than many places, and it is a very pretty and quaint woodwork structure with lots of plants and rooms facing a large second floor balcony. The staff was also incredibly nice and helpful-- the man at the desk when we were there whipped out a map of all the local activities, with prices in US dollars, and suggested the ones he thought we'd like. We follows his advice and picked up awesome zip lining and horseback riding excursions! The hotel is much like staying in a clean, simple cabin while doing outdoorsy stuff... no pool, jacuzzi, internet, or any frills. NOTE: the De Lucia Restaurant across the street provides the breakfast buffet, which was my favorite out of all our hotels! Delicious fresh fruit, coffee, OJ, muesli, gallo de pinto, toast, and the MOST amazing marmelade of some sort that I've ever had. We also ate there for lunch and dinner and it was our favorite dining experience-- huuuge, cheaper lunches and our last night we had an awesome steak dinner with local wine and fantastic coconut flan! The place is a big family affair, and also mostly woodwork, and tourist buses are often seen there as it is a known hidden gem. But back to the hotel-- it's at least a 1/2 mile walk downtown, although downhill. Walking is tricky since there is very little sidewalk. Also coming back uphill is very, very steep. But the staff will call cabs in the drop of a hat. I would agree this is NOT a posh place, but cozy and earthy and almost worth it just for the restaurant! Best for single couples, more versatile and active travelers.

We stayed at the De Lucia Inn Hotel for one night with a small tour group (12 people).

The room doors only stayed shut when locked. Our room smelled musty. I killed at least ten different types of bugs and spiders during our short stay in our room. Upon arrival there was also a cigarette butt in the toilet and a used bandaid in the shower.
There was no air conditioning.

The hotel has a restaurant across the road where we ate dinner and breakfast. I thought that it was some of the worst food that we had the entire time in Costa Rica.

The room we stayed in was large (16 vaulted ceiling), very clean, and the bathroom was also, large, clean, and very nice. However, it was very loud at night... I'm not sure if it was just our suite but the wind seemed to get into the roof and it created enough of a racket that we couldn't sleep without ear plugs. The staff was very nice and helpful, and as mentioned the rooms were large and clean, the only reason I would recommend not staying there was due to noise (and maybe it only affects some rooms)... but it was very noisy and we couldn't sleep.

However, we would strongly recommend the restaurant... best meal I had in all of Costa Rica.

Stayed 2 nights as part of a group tour. We were all in the original 12 room block and the upstairs balcony was great for a pre-dinner drink. The room was fine - try not to have one of the middle rooms downstairs because all the plumbing from the three rooms above goes down a trunking in the corner. Free internet at reception. Hotel in a very quiet situation, but only a short walk from its own (very good) restaurant and two or three more just up the road. The sandwich shop run by the two American ladies (top of the road, turn left and it's just past the first restaurant) was brilliant. Night walks into the forest about 200m away. Also a tram that ran round the forest taking about 1 1/2 hours was very interesting.
