“Paradise found, two hours north of Zihuatanejo!”

My wife and I were doing an extended driving trip through Mexico, part of which included traveling down the Pacific Coast from Puerto Vallarta to Zihuatanejo. Not wanting to drive more than about 4 hours a day, we decided to split up the stretch between Manzanillo and Zihuatanejo by spending a night in the remote fishing village of Caleta de Campos. My wife searched the web, and booked us a night at a place that sounded good, “Casa de la Rosa.”

When we got to Caleta de la Campos, the little town was bustling with activity and local color. Motor bikes buzzing up and down the street, merchants sweeping the sidewalk in front of their stores, and school kids playing in the zocoalo.

We followed the instructions to the hotel that were e-mailed to us by the owner, down a bumpy dirt road, until we got to a white casa perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. “Casa de la Rosa” was painted on the wall, surrounded by clinging vines of red Bougainvillea flowers.

The owner, Cythia, a Canadian ex-pat, greeted us with smiles, and proceeded to give us a tour of her place. Her place was charming, having several cute quest rooms, a small swimming pool, and a common kitchen and sitting area which was available to all guests. She then showed us to our room, which had a stunning view of an expansive stretch of palm tree-lined coast.

Cynthia recommended a little downtown restaurant for dinner, located next door to the pizza place. We sat in plastic chairs at one of three tables placed in the street in front of the little café. Having no written menu, the proprietor told us what he had available. We ended up order 3-different tacos and two enchiladas to share (which came with pinot beans), and a couple of Cokes. Total damages: $4, and the food was actually very good!

In the morning before we left, Cynthia suggested we backtrack a couple of miles down Hwy. 200 to the remote surfing beach of Playa Nexpa, to enjoy breakfast at one of the little seaside palapa topped restaurants; another great hit!

Our stay as Casa De la Rosa was one of those special experience we will always remember. We only regret we didn’t know what it would be like, otherwise we would have allocated more days there. If you are looking to get away from it all (no internet or TV), if you want to experience the real old-time Mexico, a stay here is a must! These types of places are quickly disappearing. Experience it while you still can!

“Above the sea”
Reviewed December 27, 2016 for a stay in December 2016

This property has a lot to offer. It's perched high on the side of a hill, with stunning views of the ocean and, of course, sunsets. There is no beach access here, as you're on the side of a cliff, so you'll have to drive to the beach. But it's a 3-4 minute drive, and the "downtown" strip of Caleta de Campos (not much to speak of in terms of a town, but a good number of stores and rank-and-file restaurants) is only 2-3 minutes away by car. The owner is a Canadian woman who has lived in Mexico for at least a decade, and she's very helpful and energetic, keeping the place super tidy and very serviceable. There is a fully stocked communal kitchen (plates, pots, utensils, stove, oven, microwave, etc.) if you want to cook, and you can store stuff in the fridge/freezer. There is a small swimming pool, and lots of majorly outstanding deck space on which to relax and look out over the ocean. The room we stayed in (Eagle's Nest) was fine, nothing fancy, but very clean and tidy and everything you need (shower, towels, soap/shampoo, king bed, coffeemaker but no coffee). No A/C, but there is a ceiling fan ... and a private balcony with two chairs overlooking the ocean. My wife and I couldn't imagine a super long-term stay here, as the town has nothing to see and the enramada/beach area is sort of one-time-only visit-worthy. But maybe it's good for families. We didn't see the bigger rooms, and there is a LOT of common area space (with games and movies on VHS(!) to watch, so you will never feel confined.
