Lovely country hotel between Hay on Wye and Hereford. The food is amazing. It's in a great position for walks in the the black mountains, and sitting on the bank of the River Wye to fish. We have visited numerous times and keep going back.

Where do I start! I got the start day wrong which caused great amusement to everyone staying at the Red Lion, but hey ho! Everyone was very friendly and we were made to feel at home, that was Mike the owner all the staff and the other guests. There was 'a lot' of fishing talk and much good banter over breakfast, dinner and Butty. We also held a counseling session with Nick with regards to the Aga Saga!!
Food and service was very good. Rooms clean and tidy what more could we have asked for....few more fish maybe.

We stayed here for three nights on a short relaxing break. Initially we were a little disappointed by the appearance of the hotel because it is nothing like as beautiful as it appears on its website (I think the website photograph was taken from the other side of a nearby orchard!). But this hotel was actually wonderful. The room was very comfortable, the staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. The menu was refreshingly different from most hotel fare; I would have liked to have stayed longer to sample everything! Everything was cooked to perfection and totally delicious. The atmosphere in the hotel was lovely - apart from my friend and me, everyone was an angler. So there was no "dressing up" for dinner or airs and pretensions - everyone was down to earth and openly friendly. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. This is the perfect place for a relaxing few days. Or even longer.

I have been visiting the Red Lion at least once per year since 2006, with 2-3 fishing companions. Mike has just got it right! Reserved access to some pretty good fishing in lovely countryside, totally adequate and comfortable accommodation, great dinners, amazing breakfasts, brilliant hospitality, warm atmosphere and ......... Butty Bach!!!!!

I stayed at the Red Lion recently on a fishing long weekend, although I have eaten there before which was excellent in its own right , it was the first time I had boarded there. The room was basic but all the more pleasant for that and very clean ,breakfasts are excellent and meals great with generous portions, best of all is the 'crack' in the bar and Mikes willingness to help with any inquiries...............as another reviewer has mentioned ,it is so pleasing to be in a good non chain country inn .oh by the way the fishing was as good as the beer!.

Stopped off here for lunch before visiting Brobury Gardens nearby. We had sandwiches and chips, eaten in the rear garden. The food arrived very quickly and was good, lovely dressing on the salad accompaniment . The hotel itself is quite dated, but was very clean and we will return to sample the restaurant food, as the menu looked interesting and was very reasonable priced. So don't be put off by the old fashioned decor, stop and enjoy!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Red Lion Hotel is situated in the tiny hamlet of Bredwardine, which nestles on the banks of the River Wye just twelve miles from Hereford, and 8 miles from Hay-on-Wye.Built of red brick, its origins lie in the seventeenth century when it was used as a coaching inn, also the lounge bears the name The Courtroom. This is where the circuit judge of the day used to sit in judgement. Our aim at the hotel has been to provide you with a peaceful haven in the tranquil heart of England away from the hustle and bustle of work and every day life. Whilst every effort has been made to combine this warm, congenial atmosphere with all the comforts and facilities of a modem day hotel, you will find that the Red Lion retains much of its old world charm including oak beams, and beautiful antiques with blazing log fires through the winter months. The reputation of our dining-room relies on well prepared home-cooked food, using as much fresh produce as possible and cooked to order by our highly regarded chef. You can choose from a varied range of meals off our menus, whether its at breakfast, lunch time or in the evening and remember to look out for our "Specials" board.Whilst situated in the heart of one of the most beautiful areas in the country there are a whole host of things to do and enjoy. These include Herefords Cathedral and the famous Mappa Mundi exhibition to the local Small Breeds & Owl Centre and of course a visit to Herefordshire would not be complete without a trip to Bulmers Cider Museum and for the more active amongst us canoeing down the magnificent river Wye.What ever the reason for your visit we are here to help you enjoy your stay and our beautiful county. ... more   less
