Malmkopings Bad & Camping
Reviewed August 1, 2011

Nice place to stay. It's not too large and located beside a small lake on the one site, and wood on the other site. There is a small beach for people, and an extra beach for dogs. Behind the site a historical train could be seen. The washing rooms and WC's are very good and clean. The only point to criticize is the restaurant. You can eat the things, but not enjoy. So self service is the help.

Mälmköpings Bad & Camping is a campground/RV Park much in the style of a KOA campground in the USA. In addition to the campsites, they have a youth hostel, small cabins and an apartment for rent. There are lots of RV spaces and tent spaces, all crammed in like sardines, typical for this type of a campground.

LOCATION - The campground is located just on the edge of Mälmköping, you can walk into the town in about 20 minutes or so. It is set on Lake Mälaren, with a beach for swimming.

SERVICES - The campground is rated 4-stars and the service house is rated 5-stars. It has showers, bathrooms, a kitchen where you can cook, a dishwasher (broken at the time we went), and a play area for kids. Onsite you have a small cafe/bar where you can get food and beers, kids playground, a sauna, mini-golf, a bocce ball court, dog wash, car wash, and there is wireless internet available throughout the campground for a fee (I think it was about $10/day). You can also hire mountain bikes, canoes, paddleboats and rowboats at the reception. A fully developed family campground, many people rent spaces all year round, or for the summer, and stay here in their RVs or tents.

COTTAGES - There are 9 cottages, ranging in size from 6 sq meters for a 2-bed cottage to 10 sq meters for a 4-bed cottage. They run about 300 SEK ($50) for the smallest 6 sq m cottage (add 100 SEK ($15) for a hotplate and refrigerator and another 100 SEK if you want 10 sq m) to 600 SEK ($95) for a 4-bed cottage with 16 sq m. They are ultra-basic and ultra-small, just twin beds available, but they are clean and kind of funny. They have a front porch with a couple chairs, and two windows. You have to pay 80 SEK per person ($13pp) extra if you want sheets and towels, or bring your own, and nothing is provided, just the shell. Make sure to sweep your own floor and clean yourself to avoid extra charges. There are no bathrooms in the cottages, so you need to walk about 5 minutes to the service house to use the bathrooms or showers. The showers are 5 SEK I believe for every 3 minutes or so, usually we had to re-up once, so bring 5 SEK coins. It's a 2 minute walk to the cafe and bar, and a 5 minute walk to the beach for swimming.

ROOMS/HOSTEL - There are six rooms, a single room, three double rooms (with single beds), one 4-bed room with bunkbed, and one 6-bed room with bunkbeds. These rooms are in the main building with the gift shop and cafe. The advantage to these rooms over the cabins is that you don't have to walk outdoors to use the shared bathroom. The downside is that it is also the bathroom for the cafe so a lot of people are coming and going, and it's only one toilet and one shower, so it's busy a lot. Also you hear the noise from the people at the reception and cae. It's nice that you can just go a few steps to get a bite to eat, some coffee or beer, and you're near the top of the hill so you don't have to walk so far to town. Of course, you have to walk a few extra minutes up the hill to get back from the beach if you are swimming.

The rooms are very simple, with a small TV and bed, and that's about it. They are clean though. Sheets and towels are 80 SEK pp ($13 pp) extra, or you can bring your own. Cleaning too is very expensive, so clean your own room. They start at 300 SEK ($50) for a single room, 500 SEK ($80) for a double room, 650 SEK ($100) for the 4-bed room and 800 SEK ($125) for the 6-bed room. Wireless internet is available for $10/day or so with good speed.

APARTMENT - We haven't stayed in the apartment, but there is one 1-bedroom apartment that is 55 sq m with 4 beds, a kitchen, balcony, and a washing machine. It is 950 SEK ($150) per night. Add the extra for sheets and towels.

SERVICE - There really is no service, just someone at the front desk that offers minimal assistance if needed.

CAFE - The food in the cafe is minimal, just a few items in a daily lunch, pretty rustic like roast beef slices with potato salad or waffles, for example. There is beer, soft drinks and ice cream. Plan to go into town if you want anything but the most basic meal. In town, you have a liquor store, a few restaurants, pizzeria, supermarket for supplies, etc.

For what it is, Mälmköping is a clean, well cared for place to stay. It's very basic accommodation, quite pricey by non-Sweden standards, but works, and the town is cozy particularly at Midsummer when they have a popular traditional Midsommarfest (plan to reserve well in advance and pay extra for Midsummer weekend though). There is a sightseeing train that runs by here as well, and it's nice to take a boat ride on the lake. Bring your fishing pole!
