“Rooms need an uplift”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

The lobby and Restaurant are very well decorated and clean. Service is good in restaurant. We had some small problems with the front desk, but were able to correct it. The hotel rooms are in need of being updated. They are looking very worn. Bedding, linens need to be replaced. Otherwise it was clean and quiet.

I have stayed at the KiKiWak a few times in the last 8 years. It is a decent hotel with a nice feel to it, native artwork displayed in the lobby. As a smoker I especially enjoy having a facility to accommodate smokers, something canadians hotels rarely do.

I arrived late, thankful for the shuttle from the airport, which is in the middle of nowhere. Upon arrival, I was told the room key machine wasn't working and I would have to be escorted and let into my room. The machine stayed broken the entire length of my trip, 4 days. I know you are isolated up there, but there's no reason that thing could not have been replaced or repaired in 24 hours!

The rooms were clean and comfortable for the most part, but the whole property is showing it's age. The colors were 1998, the mattresses rock hard and the ironing board in my room was an antique. On top of that, the water never got more than tepid in the shower.

My major complaint is with the food and the service in the restaurant. The lounge shares space with the restaurant and in some weird loophole, they allow smoking in the lounge, so half or more of the restaurant stinks like smoke. Reeks is a better word. You have a hard time with room service, since they don't put menus in the rooms. When there, the service is slow and the food is not very good quality.

It's the best in The Pas, but not by much. They need to spend some money and bring the place up to a reasonable standard. No way they keep their 3.5 star rating from Canada Select next time otherwise.

Room Tip: Ask for one away from the parking lots. I could read in my room with the lights off in the middle o...

We were visiting in The Pas in August and the Kikiwak hotel was clean, the staff friendly and the resturant was good. The pool and hot tub were well maintained.
The rooms were clean, and we were very satisfied.
The prices reasonable compared to the Super 8, and unlike the Super 8 the hot tub at the Kikiwak was in working order.
I would stay at the Kikiwak if I am in The Pas again.

If you stay more than a days they want you to move to different rooms. Internet does not work in all rooms and is very weak.

I was in The Pas for a couple of days on a business trip, and the Kikiwak was fine. It was clean and pretty modern. The front desk staff always seemed to be new. They were very slow to check in/out and had to ask the supervisors about a lot of things. But they were pleasant enough. The hotel is located on the Indian Reserve across the river from the town of The Pas, and isn't within walking distance of anything. I suppose you could walk to the small mall or the casino but there are no sidewalks and I never saw anybody walking. It's a 5 miinute drive to anything in The Pas, maybe 10 minutes to the very south end of town.

I'd like to get negatives out of the way first:
The matresses in my rooms were encased, so there was no way to check the matress for bed bugs. What I could see was clean, and no bites during my stay.
The rooms are dark; there's little lighting.
The sink/mirror station is narrow, so if you like to get close to the mirror to inspect your pours, brings your own mirror.
The decor is dated, and there is visible wear and tear. The linens were worn, but very clean.
The pool was locked, so we couldn't use it, and the hot tub was drained.

Now the good:
We thought the quality/value ratio of the food in the restaurant was very high. It's not the fastest service, but food is good (lots of veggies in the lasagna) and cheap for the north.
It's right next door to Tim Horton's.
The VLT lounge/bar allows indoor smoking, so if you smoke, you can have one indoors. There's also a pool table, so you can smoke and play a game of pool!!
The hotel was pretty quiet while we were there.
All staff and many guests were aboriginal, so you can have an amazing cultural experience if you're open to it.

Overall, I think it's your best bet in The Pas.
