WILD FENNEL FOOD AND WINE RESTAURANT
Price range: $0 - $18
Restaurant details

The Wild Fennel is located in the centre of Mayne Island, in a wee development of a few shops. The restaurant has some pretty wild/quirky/interesting/cool/odd original art on the walls, created by one of the co-owners. The artist served us, and he certainly didn't lack for personality! Lots of fun.

Other than the art, the space doesn't have a ton of ambiance. The menu selections sound good, but their execution was a bit off the mark. For example, the shrimp bisque was more like a hearty bowl of tomato herb soup, rather than the delicate creamy soup you'd expect. The herb-crusted salmon burger was lacking in flavour, and the berry 'aioli' and iceberg lettuce didn't help. My husband loved his smoked tuna burger though.

Good beer on tap. Nice place, but if you want fine dining on Mayne, this isn't it (instead, head to the Oceanwood Resort's restaurant!).

Having the owners serve you makes you feel like you're a friend over for a meal. Plus, the spot is decorated with original art done by the owners. The dishes use local ingredients, have lots of flavour, and you get a generous amount for your coin. They have an outside patio (if you can stand the hornets that plague the island) and they are nicely situated near the Montrose Road entrance to Mt Parke Park.
A few things to be aware of:
- the kitchen closes at 3pm, so be mindful of when you are going to drop in. We chose to have a late lunch (2pm) and the place wasn't busy.
- we had our 7 month old daughter with us and they did have a high chair, but there was no change-table in the washroom.

While staying on Mayne Island for a friend's wedding, we've had lunch and dinner at Wild Fennel. The service from the owners is lively, fun and very accommodating. The food is creative, tasty and reasonably priced.

It is a small place and can get busy, especially at around 6:30 pm. They will take reservations for larger tables only.

if you're looking to dine later, it best to call ahead.

What the biggest refreshing thing about The Wild Fennel is that minus the city hype and pretension, it simply delivers delicious homemade food. We loved the quirky fun warm atmosphere and enjoyed the fabulous beer and wine list to boot. The owners sure have a winning combo going here - locally attended and you almost feel like you're in someone's home having dinner! Oh, yes - don't miss the freshly made desserts... My husband hasn't stopped talking about the Fennel since.

The room is still pleasantly small and warm, but Wild Fennel has a new chef in the kitchen. Steve Alkema has taken the menu from coastal to global, but maintains a focus on local ingredients. Try the bison burger, perfectly seared and served with a sweet onion and banana pepper chutney ($12). Entrées typically priced ator below$20. The-all-B.C. wine card is well-edited (bottles from $29).
