Corbett House Country Inn

This is the place to stay on Pender Island but only if you have a good heart and will appreciate the genuine kindness and thoughtfulness Eve and John exemplify. I usually don't care for B&B's as they always feel like being in a Stepford wife dollhouse, scary! The Corbett House is tastefully designed, furnished with an eye for the creative, much of the art, Eve's wonderful BW photo's. The landscaping is simple in a holistic way, very inviting to walk around the fruit tree orchard and making sure you say to the goats. I wish I had more time there than the quick weekend mostly spent working, I'll go back in a heartbeat.

Corbett House is a lovely house set in beautiful grounds and the hosts were friendly enough, but there were a few things which we felt weren't quite up to standard: the "en-suite" bathroom was actually just a toilet and sink, so we had to share the shower with other people and it wasn't always completely clean. You also don't get a key to the room and there are large gaps under the doors so sound carries and we didn't feel as if the room was completely private. It is probably one of the nicer places to stay on Pender Island, but it was average compared to the other B&Bs we stayed in our Canada trip.

We enjoyed the wonderful hospitality, the great breakfast, the beautiful backyard, the goats, the sheep and all the rest. The island is beautiful as is the ferry ride to get there. The nearest restaurant is closed on Monday but there's another nice one in Port Browning.

We stayed one night at Corbett House during a bike tour on the gulf island, and it was just lovely. John and Eve were fantastic hosts and the house was beautiful. The rooms were perfect and the breakfast was amazing. We loved it! I'd recommend it to anyone.

Having home-dried peppermint tea and cookies on the porch of Corbett house in fancy tea cups was one of my 12-year-old daughter's highlights from our week-long Gulf Islands cycle tour. John and Eve were so welcoming of both of us, so attentive to my daughter, Sylvie, and we enjoyed Eve's fabulous photographs and art collection throughout the house.

They have done an absolutely marvelous job of renovating this historic farm house, and the breakfasts filled us up elegantly for our 2 days of cycling on Pender. Our bedroom was beautifully and comfortably appointed, and we fell asleep listening to the soft sounds of insects (the good kinds!) chirping in the fields nearby.

The nearby (10-minute-walk on a country road) Hope Bay Cafe was one of our favorite restaurants in all of the Gulf Islands, so much so that we broke our "try something different every night" rule and ate there twice.

I look forward to coming back to Pender Island with my husband, and to drinking tea and reading on the porch of Corbett House with him as well!

We have been B and B-ing and ocean kayaking in the Gulf Islands for 20 years, and have always tried to stay at accommodations on the waterfront. This year we couldn't find such a one on Pender Island, so we decided to go inland, and found Corbett House. What a gem! The house is a large, 111-year-old country farmhouse, lovingly restored by its owners, set in a wide, peaceful valley with grazing sheep. We felt immediately relaxed as we were greeted by Eve and John, had a quick tour of the house and then stepped into the orchard where we settled into comfy chairs in the shade and let any remaining tensions drain away. A little later we were invited for wine and cheese (beer for John) in front of Eve's studio -- she is a photographic artist whose work is shown on the island -- which borders the orchard and where we met the two sheep and three goats, including Gertrude, a Nubian goat who stands on her hind legs and "prunes" the lower branches of the apple trees. We had a lovely large room with king-size bed, with our own bathroom and tub. The shower a few steps down the hall is shared with the two other guest rooms. There is a large, well-furnished guest lounge which is the original living room, with many books, games, flat screen TV -- and good floor lamps to read by, which is important for us; most B and Bs we've been to recently don't have adequate lighting for evening reading. Our room had it's own small deck with a valley view, and one can sit/read etc. in wicker chairs on the front verandah, or in the orchard. Delicious, full breakfasts are served in the dining room.

The real treasures of this place are Eve and John. They are warm and gracious, enjoy meeting people, and do whatever they can to help you enjoy your stay. My wife has some dietary limitations and Eve provided her a special breakfast every day (four days). On our last night, Eve brought tea and cookies into the lounge for us. They are a great source of island knowledge, including where to eat, the best beach accesses and viewpoints, etc.

When we go back to Pender Island, Corbett House Country Inn will be our first and only choice.

Room Tip: If it is available, get the room with the king-size bed.

John and Eve made us feel right at home. Charming room with a breakfast to die for. Have a glass of wine while watching the sun set, as the goats frolic in the yard. Need I say more. Pender Island is our favorite gulf island, thanks to its natural beauty and laid back Penderites.
